Job summary

Ground Control in Wales is seeking an experienced Structural Examiner to perform detailed examinations of rail structures across the network. You will assess structural condition, identify defects and deterioration, and produce accurate reports to support safe railway operations.

This hands-on role requires rail and structural examination experience, with a focus on technical accuracy, safe working practices, and clear documentation.

Qualifications

  • Experience in rail, civil engineering or structural examination.
  • Strong knowledge of structural defects, deterioration and condition assessment.
  • Experience producing technical reports using photographs, sketches and site records.
  • Working knowledge of railway operations, access and safe systems of work.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out structural examinations in line with Network Rail and Ground Control standards.
  • Assess structures for defects, damage, deterioration and other safety concerns.
  • Record findings through detailed notes, sketches, photographs and digital systems.
  • Produce clear and accurate examination reports.
  • Identify and escape serious or potentially dangerous defects.
  • Plan site access, resources, equipment and examination activities.
  • Work with operational and enabling teams to support safe site delivery.
  • Undertake work at height, rope access, confined space or over-water examinations where qualified.
  • Support improvements to examination methods, reporting and digital processes.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday

We're looking for an experienced Structural Examiner to carry out detailed examinations of rail structures across the network. You'll assess structural condition, identify defects and deterioration, and produce accurate reports that help keep the railway, passengers and workforce safe. This is a hands-on role for someone with strong rail and structural examination experience who takes pride in technical accuracy and safe working.

What we're looking for
  • Experience in rail, civil engineering or structural examination.
  • Strong knowledge of structural defects, deterioration and condition assessment.
  • Good understanding of railway operations, access and safe systems of work.
  • Experience producing technical reports using photographs, sketches and site records.
  • Strong observational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety).
  • STE4 Structures Examination competence.
  • IRATA Level 1 or Level 3.
  • Working at Height medical.
  • First Aid certificate.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • COSS or IWA.
  • PASMA, IPAF or LOLER awareness.
  • NRSWA Supervisor or CSCS Supervisor Card.
  • IOSH or SMSTS.
  • Confined Spaces, water or environmental qualifications.
