Job description

An exciting time to become a Petrofac Graduate

It’s a fascinating field to work in, and as Petrofac is involved across every area of the energy lifecycle, there’s plenty of variety. We are looking for graduates that bring the right energy across disciplines, from engineering to business support functions such as business development and supply chain.

As a graduate at Petrofac, you will gain a breadth of experience working with world-class experts on some of the most significant energy projects. And of course, you won’t do it alone. Your mentors and colleagues will be with you every step of the way, offering advice, guidance, or just a friendly ear when needed.

We are bringing the right energy.

We are a leading international service provider to the energy industry, with a diverse client portfolio including many of the world’s leading energy companies. Petrofac designs, builds, manages, and maintains oil, gas, refining, petrochemicals, and renewable energy infrastructure. Our purpose is to enable our clients to meet the world’s evolving energy needs. The world is re-thinking its energy supply and energy security needs, planning for a phased transition to alternative energy sources. We are here to help our clients meet these evolving energy needs. This is an exciting time to join us on this journey.

Our values – driven, agile, respectful, and open – underpin how we work together, inform the decisions we make, and are fundamental to our future success.

We recruit, reward, and develop our people based on merit regardless of race, nationality, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status or disability. We value our people and treat everyone who works for or with Petrofac fairly and without discrimination.

We support flexible working requests and have adopted a hybrid approach for most of our office-based roles. We ask employees to be present in the office at least three days per week.

So, what is in it for you?

  1. Structured training aligned where appropriate to the requirements of recognised professional bodies.
  2. A mentor with technical experience, selected by the Company to provide you with day-to-day support.
  3. Challenging hands-on work experience projects that will broaden your experience and knowledge of our organisation, enabling you to make a real contribution from day one.
  4. Personal development programmes to develop your interpersonal skills and leadership capabilities.

The Role

As a Graduate Structural Engineer, you will be providing support to design projects for new installations and to the ongoing operation of existing facilities across the world.

On joining the engineering team, you will be placed with your home discipline to support our project work. Following that assignment, you will have the opportunity to work in business development, project engineering, cost control and estimating. The aim is to provide a broad understanding of the business and open opportunities for further and deeper career development. You will also:

  • Support projects from initial concept and field development studies through front-end engineering to detailed design, commissioning and operational support.

Apply your knowledge to the design of structures or civil works for onshore facilities.

Design of structurally efficient offshore support structures and topsides for wind farm substations, carbon capture or oil and gas platforms under applied environmental loads.

Model and analyse new or existing structures using finite element software such as Sesam, Abaqus, SACS and STAAD.

Analyse structures under abnormal or accident loads such as blast, ship impact and dropped objects.

Assess floating structures and moorings subject to wave and other environmental loading.

Produce project documents such as reports, basis of design documents, specifications etc.

Previous graduates have undertaken the following:

  • Spent time offshore working on decommissioning a disused platform.
  • Travelled overseas on projects and business initiatives.
  • Developed a hybrid power study methodology for an offshore carbon capture platform.
  • Supported the cost control on a complex carbon capture project.
  • Built a quantified risk analysis model to support the regulatory application for a hydrogen plan in the UK.
  • Joined the business development team to build relationships with potential and existing clients.
  • Developed cost estimates for the overall development of projects to support client financial investment decisions.

Qualification Requirements

Master’s degree in structural or mechanical engineering.

Essential

  • High level of numeracy and IT skills.
  • A good standard of written English.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Team Player.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel.

Desirable

  • Understanding and awareness of new energies e.g. carbon capture, hydrogen, wind power.
  • Understanding and awareness of the oil, gas and energy business.
  • Previous placement or work experience is preferred but not essential.

Equal opportunities

We recruit, reward and develop our people based on merit regardless of race, nationality, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status or disability. We value our people and treat everyone who works for or with Petrofac fairly and without discrimination.
