Job summary

Balfour Beatty Living Places is seeking a Street Lighting Designer to create and deliver lighting designs for highways, public spaces, and urban areas. You will run lighting calculations and prepare drawings, reports, and specifications to support project lifecycle delivery.

The role requires experience in street lighting, CAD/lighting software, and a full UK driving licence with willingness to travel to sites and client locations.

Qualifications

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience in street lighting or highway electrical design.
  • Knowledge of street lighting standards and regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
  • Experience using lighting design software.
  • Understanding of electrical distribution and highway infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as required.

Responsibilities

  • Design street lighting schemes for highways, roads, junctions, pedestrian areas and public spaces.
  • Produce lighting calculations using Lighting Reality, DIALux evo, or AGi32.
  • Prepare detailed layouts, specifications, reports and drawings using CAD software.
  • Ensure designs comply with standards, client requirements and safety legislation.
  • Select lighting columns, luminaires, brackets, foundations and control systems.
  • Conduct site surveys and assess project constraints.
  • Coordinate design delivery with highway, civil, electrical and utility engineers.
  • Support planning applications, approvals and construction with technical input.
  • Promote energy-efficient solutions including LED lighting and smart controls.
  • Maintain design documentation and support continuous improvement.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of infrastructure projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop technically robust designs that enhance safety, improve efficiency, and support the transition to smarter, greener networks.

What you'll be doing

As a Street Lighting Designer, you'll be responsible for producing high-quality lighting designs and supporting projects throughout their lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing street lighting schemes for highways, roads, junctions, pedestrian areas, and public spaces.
  • Producing lighting calculations using industry-standard software such as Lighting Reality, DIALux evo, or AGi32.
  • Preparing detailed lighting layouts, specifications, technical reports, and construction drawings using CAD software.
  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant industry standards, client requirements, and health and safety legislation.
  • Selecting suitable lighting columns, luminaires, brackets, foundations, and control systems.
  • Undertaking site surveys and assessments to evaluate existing infrastructure and project constraints.
  • Working closely with highways, civil, electrical, and utility engineers to coordinate design delivery.
  • Supporting planning applications, technical approvals, and construction activities by providing technical advice and responding to design queries.
  • Promoting sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, including LED lighting, smart controls, and carbon reduction initiatives.
  • Maintaining accurate design documentation and supporting continuous improvement across projects.
Who we're looking for

Essential:

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in street lighting or highway electrical design.
  • Knowledge of relevant street lighting standards and regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
  • Experience using lighting design software.
  • Understanding of electrical distribution and highway infrastructure.

Desirable:

  • SMSTS or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • G39 and 214 Safe Isolation certification.
  • Highways Electrical Association (HEA) Approved Person Card.
  • Knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and designer responsibilities.
