Strategic Consultant

Job Description / Job Scope:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop a consolidated funding strategy supporting UKAEA's Fusion Technology programme across key technical areas such as materials and manufacturing, radiation characterization, thermal hydraulics and liquid metals, magnet technologies, and whole plant modelling and integration.
- Identify, develop, and maintain key relationships with national and international partners in fusion and other high-tech sectors (fission, space, defence) to support strategic goals.
- Map existing funding opportunities and review internal proposals for alignment with strategic programmes and collaborations.
- Create opportunities to influence the funding landscape through strategic partnerships.
- Design funding frameworks, secure partnerships, and ensure alignment with institutional and financial objectives.
- Stay updated on industry trends, government policies, and economic factors affecting funding opportunities.
- Support the development of internal processes to facilitate the funding strategy.
- Lead, motivate, and communicate effectively with senior leadership and project teams.
- Embed and promote UKAEA's EDI and Social Value goals.
Qualifications Required:
- Masters or PhD in a technical science or engineering field (preferred).
Experience Required:
- Extensive experience in securing and managing research grants, government funding, or private investments.
- Experience in developing long-term funding strategies aligned with organizational goals.
- Understanding of compliance, reporting requirements, and best practices for funding applications.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in business case writing and development.
- Experience working with diverse senior stakeholders and external partners, ideally with public funding.
- Knowledge of the UK fusion sector and strategy (preferred).
- Experience engaging with industry in science and engineering sectors.
- Strong commercial awareness to make economically sound decisions that maximize programme value.
