Job summary

The Best Connection in Smethwick is seeking an experienced Steel Rolling Mill Maintenance Engineer to maintain and improve rolling mill machinery across the site. You will ensure reliability, performance and safety while supporting upgrades and major maintenance projects.

You will diagnose faults, read engineering drawings, and perform planned and reactive maintenance on heavy rolling mill equipment in a busy manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Experience maintaining heavy industrial machinery in steel mills or similar environments.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Experience with planned maintenance and breakdown maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance on rolling mill equipment.
• Diagnose and repair faults on gearboxes, bearings, conveyors, hydraulics, rollers and drives.
• Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimise production downtime.
• Inspect, overhaul, align, and rebuild mechanical equipment.
• Support installations, machinery upgrades, and continuous improvement projects.
• Complete maintenance records and assist with root cause analysis.
• Manage critical spare parts and liaise with suppliers for replacements.
• Ensure all work complies with Health & Safety and LOTO procedures.
• Participate in planned shutdowns and major maintenance projects when required.

The Best Connection is recruiting an experienced Steel Rolling Mill Maintenance Engineer on behalf of our client in Smethwick.

The Role

You'll play a key role in maintaining and improving rolling mill machinery, ensuring maximum reliability, performance, and safety across the site.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance on rolling mill equipment.
• Diagnose and repair faults on gearboxes, bearings, conveyors, hydraulic systems, rollers, drives, and associated machinery.
• Respond quickly to breakdowns to minimise production downtime.
• Inspect, overhaul, align, and rebuild mechanical equipment.
• Support installations, machinery upgrades, and continuous improvement projects.
• Complete maintenance records and assist with root cause analysis.
• Manage critical spare parts and liaise with suppliers to source replacement components.
• Ensure all work is carried out safely and in line with Health & Safety and LOTO procedures.
• Participate in planned shutdowns and major maintenance projects when required.

What We're Looking For

• Experience maintaining heavy industrial machinery within a steel mill, rolling mill, foundry, metal processing, or similar environment.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of gearboxes, bearings, shafts, couplings, hydraulics, conveyors, and mechanical drives.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Experience with both planned preventative and breakdown maintenance.
• Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience.
