Job summary

Northern Trains Limited in Manchester Piccadilly is seeking an experienced Station Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operation of one of the North’s busiest stations. You will coordinate train movements, lead operational decisions, and ensure safety standards while delivering high-quality customer service.

The role requires resilience under pressure, strong leadership, and the ability to manage disruption and stakeholder relationships across multiple train operators.

Qualifications

  • Experience in station operations or train dispatch.
  • Knowledge of railway operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Experience managing service disruption and making decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management; familiarity with railway systems such as Kestrel and TRUST.

Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for safe, efficient operation of Manchester Piccadilly.
  • Act as central point of contact between station operations, TOCs, signalling centres, and Network Rail.
  • Coordinate train movements and operational activity to keep services running safely.
  • Support station teams during peak periods and disruptions; lead delay attribution investigations.
  • Lead emergency response and evacuation procedures when required; ensure compliance with procedures.

We're looking for an experienced and operationally focused Station Supervisor to join our team and play a critical role in the day-to-day running of Manchester Piccadilly Station.

This is an exciting opportunity for a railway professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can remain calm under pressure, and is passionate about delivering safe, reliable, and customer-focused operations.

No two days are the same. You'll be making real-time operational decisions, responding to disruption, coordinating train movements, supporting station teams, and ensuring customers experience the best possible service, even when challenges arise.

This is a highly visible role where your leadership, communication skills, and operational expertise will directly influence the performance and safety of one of the UK's busiest stations.

What You'll Be Doing
  • You'll take responsibility for ensuring the efficient and safe operation of Manchester Piccadilly Station by:
  • Acting as the central point of contact between station operations, Train Operating Companies, signalling centres, and Network Rail.
  • Coordinating train movements and operational activity to keep services running safely and efficiently.
  • Liaising with operators including Northern, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales.
  • Supporting train dispatch activities during peak periods and service disruption.
  • Managing operational incidents and service disruptions, making informed decisions to minimise customer impact.
  • Coordinating faulty train movements and working with maintenance teams to ensure timely resolutions.
  • Leading delay attribution investigations and ensuring accurate reporting using operational systems.
  • Attending disruption and performance meetings, contributing to effective service recovery plans.
  • Supporting and supervising station colleagues, ensuring compliance with operational procedures and safety standards.
  • Leading emergency response and evacuation procedures when required.
  • Building strong relationships with stakeholders to resolve issues quickly and maintain smooth station operations.
About You

We're seeking a confident and proactive operational leader who can balance safety, performance, and customer service in a demanding environment.

  • Experience within station operations, train dispatch, railway operations, or as similar operational railway environment.
  • A strong understanding of railway operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Experience managing service disruption and making decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Experience using railway operational systems such as Kestrel and TRUST.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple competing demands.
  • The ability to motivate, support, and lead colleagues through challenging situations.
