Checkout.com is seeking a Staff Engineer to set technical direction for high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems processing payments at scale. You will lead architecture decisions, drive resilience, and raise engineering standards across multiple teams.

Ideal candidates bring extensive production experience with Java or .NET, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure), and strong ownership of observability and incident response. Hybrid London-based role with global impact.

Qualifications

• Significant experience building and operating distributed backend systems in production.
• Leadership across multiple teams with technical ownership.
• Proficiency in writing production-grade code (Java or .NET).
• Experience with cloud-based development on AWS or Azure.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture of high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems.
• Design for resilience with redundancy, backpressure and recoverability.
• Set non-functional targets for availability and latency.
• Lead major technical decisions end-to-end including migrations.
• Improve observability, monitoring, and incident response.
• Mentor senior engineers and uplift engineering practices.
• Coordinate with product and platform teams for aligned delivery.
• Make build-versus-buy and rewrite trade-offs with clarity.
