Job summary

The Hospital Of St John & St Elizabeth in London is seeking a Staff Nurse to join the busy pre-assessment team. You will provide safe pre-operative care for diverse surgical specialties in a private hospital setting.

You will work autonomously within a supportive team, performing assessments, tests and referrals while maintaining high standards of care and patient-centred practice. NMC registration and relevant post-registration qualifications are essential.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse – (Adult) with a valid NMC registration.
• Post-registration qualification in nursing or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience in nursing.
• Experience in nurse-led pre-assessment services preferred.

Responsibilities

• Autonomously completes Pre-Assessment for a caseload of patients with targeted history.
• Prioritises patients in the triage pathway and optimises them in High risk clinic.
• Performs testing per NICE guidelines and initiates referrals as needed.
• Performs venepuncture, ECG, lung function tests and arranges x-ray as per policy.
• Identifies patients with health issues and conducts risk scoring.
• Reviews previous anaesthetic documentation and flags referral needs.
• Follows up on referral outcomes to confirm fitness for surgery.
• Provides support and advice to patients, carers, family and staff.
• Keeps accurate health records using Lifebox software.
• Adheres to NMC Code of Conduct and hospital policies.

Would you like to join London’s leading nursing team? We are looking for a Staff Nurse to join our busy pre-assessment department, specialising in providing care to a variety of surgical specialties, including urology, gastrointestinal surgery and plastics/cosmetic surgery.

The successful applicant will work as part of the Pre-Assessment service ensuring safe and effective pre-operative care. The post holder is responsible for ensuring the safe assessment of patients in line with Hospital and National guidelines. The candidate must aim to deliver high standards of care within a patient centred approach. The post holder must work efficiently and effectively and be able to work within a team environment. The post holder must be able to demonstrate an advanced level of assessment skills with analysis of clinical findings to determine fitness to proceed to surgery.

What would be my responsibilities as Pre-assessment Staff Nurse?

• Working autonomously, completes Pre-Assessment for a caseload of patients, undertaking a targeted history with assessment of past medical, operative and anaesthetic history.
• Prioritizes patients in based on the triage pathway and optimizing them in High risk clinic based on the validated health questionnaire.
• Completes testing as per NICE guidelines, interprets and manages the results, and where appropriate initiates relevant referrals to appropriate health care team.
• Completes venepuncture, ECG, lung function testing and requesting of x-ray as per policy.
• Identifies patients with specific health issues and undertakes relevant risk scoring where indicated and manages the results.
• Demonstrates appropriate review of previous anaesthetic documentation and is able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key factors that would require referral for anaesthetist assessment
• Follows up on outcomes of referrals to ensure fitness to proceed.
• Provides support and advice for patients, carers, family and staff.
• To be competent in Lifebox pre-assessment software to ensure accurate health records are kept at all times
• To adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Hospitals Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Standards at all times

• Diploma/degree in relevant subject
• Post registration qualification
• Demonstrate relevant experience and competency in area of specialities
• Minimum of 3 years post-registration in nursing field
• Previous experience in providing nurse led pre-assessment services.
