Job Overview

Due to expansion of our service we an opportunity for a Band 5 Nurse to join us. This is an exciting time to join our friendly and supportive Ophthalmology Nursing team.

The Eye Unit is a multidisciplinary team provided holistic care for a large group of patients with different ophthalmic conditions. We are a big team which includes 20 Nurses & HCSW's, Ophthalmologist's, Optometrist's, Technicians and Admin.

Due to expansion of our service, we have an opportunity for a Band 5 Nurse (with progression into a Band 6 once competent) to join us. This is an exciting time to join our friendly and supportive Ophthalmology Nursing team. We have recently achieved Silver accreditation and Team of the Month for our development of the Nurse Injector Service.

There are 3 main areas to our department; We have an outpatients department, a day case ward which caters for patients undergoing Eye surgery under local and general anaesthetic, and an Anti veg-f injection service.

Ophthalmology experience is preferable, however full training and support can be given. We can provide lots of teaching and training opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills around Ophthalmology.

Main duties of the job

To Work According To The NMC Code Of Professional Conduct And Relevant Professional Guidelines As a Named Nurse Or Key Worker (with Facilitation) For a Defined Group Of Patients And Take Responsibility For

  • The assessment of care and health education needs
  • Provide holistic care for our wide range of patients
  • Complete accurate documentation electronically

Main Duties Would Include

  • To work on the Ward admitting, preparing for surgery, recovering and discharging Day Case Patients who have had Eye surgery under local and general anaesthetic
  • Work in our busy outpatients department checking visual acuity, Biometry, Nurse led triage for casualty patient, undertake mini pre-assessment, ECG, Bloods, Cannulas, IV's
  • Train to become a Nurse Injector running your own clinic and progress into Band 6 specialist
  • Assist with IV fluorescein clinic

  • Clinical practice
  • Facilitation and teaching
  • Management (as appropriate)

To work in accordance with the RUH Nursing Strategy and contribute towards achieving its objectives and maintain effective communication and participate in clinical supervision as appropriate and to teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor/ role model to less experienced staff.
