We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our team on the medical day unit and outpatient department at Cavendish Square.

This is an exciting role, where you will enjoy supporting the nursing team across the outpatient and day unit ambulatory care setting. It is expected that you will be an experienced oncology nurse who demonstrates competence in SACT administration/Venepuncture/Cannulation and feels confident in supporting others with these skills.

Main duties of the job

The Royal Marsden Private Care is a dedicated private diagnostics and treatment centre located on Cavendish Square. As a specialist cancer centre, Cavendish Square has the clinical expertise, facilities and technology to provide leading private care service. Cavendish Square will link in with the Royal Marsden’s three other hospital sites, which are located in Chelsea, Sutton and Kingston. Whilst the post holder will ultimately be permanently based in Cavendish Square, all nurses will spend between 6-12 months inducting and training at the Chelsea site.

The band 5 registered nurse for Cavendish Square is an exciting role, which enables the development of skills across outpatient and medical day unit ambulatory care settings. The main roles and responsibilities include:

Following appropriate training, have specific responsibility within Outpatient’s and MDU for those patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment. This includes the administration of systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT).

To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.

To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator:

  • To complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:
  • Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
  • To promote a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, other health care professionals and external agencies.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
  • Chemotherapy competence to be gained within the first 3 months of appointment
  • CVC access and venepuncture competence to be gained within the first 3 months of appointment

Skills/Ability/Knowledge

  • Experience in oncology or area of specialty
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Experience in managing the deteriorating patient

  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members
  • Evidence of working cooperatively in a team
  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation (working with minimal supervision)
  • Able to work flexibly as part of a team cross all sites
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise
  • Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives
  • Awareness of quality issues
  • Evidence of understanding the NHS policy
  • Computer Literacy (eg: Microsoft Word and Outlook)
  • Excellent organisational skills

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
