Job summary

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic Staff Nurse to join the Day Surgery Services at the Poole site. This role is based on 34.5 hours per week with a core schedule supporting Day of Surgery, admissions, and theatre preparation.

You will admit and prepare patients, care for them post-operatively, and assist with nurse-led discharge. A supportive team environment and training opportunities are provided.

Qualifications

• NMC registered nurse with professional and clinical knowledge.
• Evidence of undergraduate education for nurses with post-registration experience.
• Excellent communication skills and patient-centred approach.
• Experience in acute or surgical settings preferred but not essential.
• Ability to supervise staff and delegate workload when required.

Responsibilities

• Admit and prepare patients for theatre in Day Surgery.
• Provide perioperative care and post-operative observation.
• Discharge patients under nurse-led discharge criteria.
• Contribute to development and expansion of the Day Surgery Service.
• Maintain high standards of care and liaise with MDT.

Job description

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic Staff Nurse to join the progressive and dedicated Day Surgery Services team at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, based on Day of Surgery at the Poole site for 34.5 hours per week. Day of Surgery incorporates an Admission and Day Surgery services. The service is currently open Mon to Fri 07:00-20:00 with plans to make this a six day service and extend opening times 22:00.The successful candidate will be responsible for admitting and preparing patients for theatre ensuring that local policy is adhered to, caring for patients post-operatively and discharging patients under the nurse led discharge criteria. Once in post, they will be a key stakeholder in the development and expansion of the Day Surgery Service with the ultimate aim of enhancing the patient's experience. The successful candidate will require significant experience within general surgical/orthopaedic nursing; have excellent communication skills and a commitment to maintaining and developing high standards. A friendly and patient-centred approach is vital to this exciting role. Previous experience in a Day Surgery setting is not essential as there is an opportunity for further training in this field, although a surgical background is preferred. • NMC Registered Nurse
• Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. Adult
• Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience, Advanced Diploma/Degree in Adult Health Nursing Studies, Experience of caring for patients with acute and long term conditions
• Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months), Experience of recovery and pre assessment
• Experience of Supervising staff
• Experience of delegating workload, motivating a team and monitoring patient progress
• Demonstrable evidence of working in Day Surgery/Surgery/Orthopaedics, IT skills and knowledge of clinical systems
• Demonstrable ability with vital signs monitoring equipment and ability to recognise the deteriorating patient, Venepuncture & cannulation
