Job summary

County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Elective and Trauma Orthopaedic Ward at the University Hospital of North Durham on a 36-hour fixed-term contract until 31 May 2027. The closing date is 30 September 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for delivering a consistently high standard of patient care. They will organise and plan care according to individual patient needs, ensuring all care requirements are met. The post holder will remain accountable for the care they provide and will work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain a safe, supportive and effective clinical environment.

Communicate changes to patient information and treatment plans clearly to team members, both verbally and in writing.

Adhere to NMC standards of record keeping to ensure accurate, timely and professional documentation.

Support the Ward Sister in setting, monitoring and maintaining high standards of care.

Participate in nursing audit and service improvement activities, including initiatives such as Essence of Care.

Work within resource and budget constraints, recognising the importance of efficient and responsible use of resources.

Provide advice and act as a role model to junior staff and colleagues, promoting best practice.

Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety in all aspects of care delivery.

About us

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

Assess patients needs and develop, implement and evaluate individualised programmes of care.

Organise and coordinate the delivery of nursing care, ensuring staff are deployed effectively to meet patient needs.

Engage in clinical supervision to support reflective practice and ongoing professional development.

Assist in resolving conflict and de-escalating situations where appropriate, maintaining a calm and professional approach.
