Job description

Salary

£45,000 to £49,000 per annum based on proven experience

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Staff Manager in East or South East London to assist with leading the team within our London business. Open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, you will be helping to lead on the delivery of the iconic red London bus services that are the foundation around which London’s world‑renowned public transport services are built.

Operating safe and reliable bus services in one of the most diverse and operationally challenging cities in the world is not for the faint‑hearted, and is one of the ultimate challenges in day‑to‑day urban bus operation.

Your challenge will be to assist with the engagement of our team to deliver efficient and effective bus services on a daily basis to meet our customers’ expectations, while adhering closely to company policies, meeting our contractual standards and obligations to Transport for London, and all statutory requirements.

In addition, you’ll assist with leading, motivating and developing your team, promoting our vision and values, as well as addressing performance issues and matters of concern to our people.

Managing the performance of a large team of drivers, through a small but dedicated team of supervisory and administrators, one of the principle daily objectives will be to make sure our bus services leave the garage safely and on time, with drivers who are alert, engaged, smart, customer focused, and properly trained and prepared to understand and meet our customers’ expectations. We expect that you’ll quickly resolve any operational problems whilst working in a close and constructive partnership with your Head of Operations, the engineering department and service performance team.

You will need to assist with employee engagement, health, safety, employee wellbeing, security and environmental issues plus working time/ drivers’ hour’s regulations, whilst championing our values. The ability to communicate effectively and forge positive working relationships with all our people and their representatives is essential, as is the ability to work within your garage’s budget and measure performance against it, whilst achieving agreed key performance targets and quality standards relating to driver performance and behaviour, driving standards, and customer service.

As you might expect, we’re looking for a proven highly motivated person with excellent people management skills, who knows how to get the best out of their team through motivation and empathy, but are equally determined to tackle difficult issues when required. You will set high standards in all aspects of your performance and interaction with others, as well as being highly organised, and able to successfully plan, analyse, prioritise, and deliver against agreed objectives. As naturally flexible individuals, you’ll also work well under pressure.

Whilst this advert states Rainham garage, the location of this role could be at any of our London based garages.

Aside from the reward of delivering in this role, there’s plenty more we can offer:

  • Great benefits including a competitive salary, company pension scheme, free financial education and affordable loans, and a range of money‑saving opportunities including discounts on holidays and retail brands, cinema outings, dental insurance, vehicle breakdown cover and hotels and attractions.
  • Free travel for you and a household member on TfL bus and rail services (this is a non‑contractual benefit) and outside London there is free travel for you and a companion on Stagecoach buses across the UK.
  • UK-wide opportunities, career development and secondment opportunities to work elsewhere in our UK business. if you’re happy working in operations then that’s absolutely fine by us…but if you do want to progress we’ll support you every step of the way. You will be given exposure to work which will develop your skills and experience to allow you to progress your career further.
  • An employee assistance programme to support health and wellbeing through a confidential service available 24 hours a day, which provides specialist guidance and assistance on a range of personal and work‑related issues, from dealing with stress and anxiety to managing financial, marital or legal issues.
  • A great working environment with loads of opportunity to make new friends from a bunch of great colleagues and employee networks building inclusive environments for women, veterans, carers, multicultural and LGBTQ+ colleagues.
