Job summary

A pioneering surgical technology firm is seeking a Human Factors Engineer to support usability activities for their innovative surgical systems. The role includes conducting usability studies, documentation per regulatory standards, and collaboration across teams. Candidates should have a degree in a relevant science discipline and strong teamwork skills. This position is hybrid, based in Cambridge, with occasional travel to the USA. Qualifications

  • Strong ability to produce well-written deliverables.
  • Experience with human factors guidance documents.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures preferred.
  • Experience as a usability study observer/data analyst.
  • Experience in a hospital environment and/or knowledge of human anatomy is advantageous.
  • Degree in a relevant science/medical discipline (or equivalent work experience).
  • Ability to travel to the USA; travel approximately twice a year for 2–3 weeks.
  • Hybrid role with three days per week in the Cambridge/Milton office.

Responsibilities

  • Support human factors engineering efforts in CMR’s Design Evaluation department.
  • Conduct formative and summative usability studies with overseas travel.
  • Compile documentation according to regulatory requirements.
  • Create and maintain use-related risk assessments.
  • Stay up-to-date with human factors data and processes.
  • Collaborate with other teams on usability-related activities.
  • Report status and issues to the Usability Group Lead.

About the Role

The main purpose of the Human Factors Engineer is to support Usability activities for new system designs and formal activities in the UK, USA and Europe. The primary responsibilities include supporting Usability activities to ensure scope is defined, creation and timely delivery of use related risk analysis, usability study documentation, and ensuring documentation is accurate and follows internal and external guidelines for content. Activities also include assisting in the delivery of formative and summative studies with help from other team members and CMR staff/external consultants if required.

Responsibilities
  • Support the human factors engineering efforts in CMR’s Design Evaluation department as required
  • Support the planning, conducting and reporting of formative and summative usability studies. This support will require travel abroad (United States).
  • Compile documentation in accordance with relevant regulatory requirements
  • Creation and maintenance of use related risk assessments and other risk related documents
  • Keeping up to date with latest human factors data and processes
  • Collaboration with other teams on joint activities impacting usability
  • Reporting of status and issues to the Usability Group Lead

We’d expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Design Evaluation remit that helps the team deliver its objectives.

About You

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

  • Ability to produce valuable, well-written deliverables in a consistent manner
  • Strong teamworking skills and able to adapt to situations (flexibility)
  • Knowledge of IEC 62366 and FDA Human Factors guidance documents
  • Experience as a usability study observer/data analyst
  • Experience of working in a hospital environment and/or knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures an advantage
  • A degree in a relevant science / medical based discipline (or equivalent work experience)
  • It is essential that the candidate can travel and work in USA. Travel is anticipated to be twice a year, for approximately 2-3 weeks at a time. This may increase in the future and so candidates will need to be able to manage both this and an increase as determined by the business
  • This position is hybrid with three days per week in the office expected (Cambridge, Milton).
