Job summary

GRAIL, a healthcare company pioneering early cancer detection, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Data Team in London. You will own systems that produce trusted, analysis-ready datasets across research and clinical programs, delivering data with integrity and compliance.

You will work in a hybrid environment, collaborating with scientists, clinicians, and data engineers to design scalable data pipelines and production-grade services that advance cancer research while meeting regulatory

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience building production-grade software systems.
• Strong fundamentals: system design, data modeling, API design, and well-tested production code.
• Experience building data-intensive software systems, not just pipelines or SQL-heavy work.
• BS in Computer Science, Engineering or Bioinformatics, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement software systems turning raw clinical, lab, and operational data into reliable, analysis-ready datasets.
• Partner with scientists, clinicians, lab operations, and data teams to understand data needs.
• Develop services, libraries, data models, and workflows enforcing data integrity and privacy-by-design.
• Navigate schema evolution, blinding, consent, and privacy compliance in complex data regimes.
• Collaborate on data quality, testing strategy, monitoring, and operational excellence.
• Lead long-lived systems that evolve with clinical and research programs.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with scientists to align technical and scientific goals.
• Contribute to documentation and onboarding to support cross-functional data literacy.
• Participate in incident response related to data quality or availability in production systems.
