Job summary

Overstory is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead the design and scaling of our data platform supporting AI-powered vegetation analysis. You will own the architecture, drive scalable patterns, and collaborate with data, ML, and product teams across a remote-first, globally distributed organization.

Ideal candidates have 10+ years building production-grade data pipelines, hands-on Dagster expertise, strong Python and Google Cloud skills, and a track record delivering scalable data systems with

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience designing and building production-grade data pipelines and systems.
• Deep hands-on experience with Dagster — asset-based orchestration, partitions, sensors, and production use.
• Proven track record building data pipelines at scale with idempotency, backfills, and partitioning.
• Strong Python skills and Google Cloud experience.
• Experience designing service-oriented architectures and handling migrations.
• Experience with Pub/Sub and event-driven patterns.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for collaboration across teams.

Responsibilities

• Architect and evolve the orchestration layer and patterns to scale reliably.
• Design and maintain production data pipelines for large-scale geospatial and temporal data.
• Lead system design across the data platform including service boundaries and data contracts.
• Drive the shift toward a service-oriented architecture with independently deployable components.
• Build event-driven workflows to replace brittle coupling.
• Establish observability, testing, and data quality frameworks.
• Mentor engineers and establish data systems standards.
