Job description
Our Team:

Semtech Corporation (NASDAQ: SMTC; www.semtech.com) is a global supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms. With 33 design, applications, and sales offices across 14 countries, we are committed to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.

At our Bristol Design Centre, we focus on PON ONU chipsets for our Fiber-to-the-X product line - including APD/PIN TIAs, laser diode drivers, optical receivers, and highly integrated transceiver ICs. These support everything from legacy 2.5Gbps GPON to today's 10Gbps XG(S)PON and next-gen 25G/50Gbps systems.

Semtech is a recognized market leader in this space, and this role offers an exciting opportunity to work with a world-class RF IC design team on cutting-edge optical access technologies. You'll be joining a close-knit group of experienced engineers who are passionate about shaping the future of high-speed data communications.

Job Summary:

As a Staff Applications Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting our Fiber-to-the-Room (FTTR) products throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) lifecycle - from lab evaluation to customer deployment. This is a hands-on engineering position focused on performance optimization, technical validation, and world-class customer support.

Responsibilities:
  1. Design and develop reference application kits to accelerate customer adoption, ensuring best-in-class performance.
  2. Create high-speed PCB layouts (up to 10Gbps) for optical communication ICs, including schematic capture and layout design.
  3. Support silicon verification through detailed lab testing, measurements, and performance tuning.
  4. Develop and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including application notes, reference designs, and kit guides.
  5. Perform RF characterization, including S-parameter measurements of critical design components.
  6. Collaborate across design, test, and systems teams to debug and optimize silicon performance.
  7. Deliver responsive customer support, working closely with field application engineers and sales teams.
  8. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, internally and externally.
  9. Continuously build product expertise to enhance support and technical delivery.
  10. Foster strong relationships across engineering, product, and commercial functions.
Required Skills and Experiences:
  1. BSc (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  2. Minimum 2 years' experience in the microelectronics or optical communications industry.
  3. Strong knowledge of high-speed PCB design and troubleshooting.
  4. Comfortable working independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
  6. Strong communication skills, ideally with experience in a customer-facing technical support role.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experiences:
  1. Master's or PhD in optical, RF, or electronics engineering.
  2. Experience with 3D EM simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS or equivalent.
  3. Strong understanding of S-parameters and signal integrity concepts.
  4. Experience supporting mixed-signal IC products and debugging at system level.
  5. Track record of producing clear, professional technical documentation.
  6. Self-starter with technical creativity, initiative, and multitasking capability.
  7. Experience engaging with the Chinese market is a strong plus.
Additional Information:
  1. Occasional international travel may be required.
  2. You may be asked to support other duties as required by the Applications Support Director or the VP, Product, Test & Optical AE.
