Job summary

Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital is seeking a dedicated decontamination support worker for the sterile services department. You will handle receiving, cleaning, sterilising and issuing reusable surgical instruments and theatre/endoscopy equipment.

Training is provided, and a decontamination qualification is desirable. The role runs Monday to Friday with some weekend shifts in a 37.5-hour week, offering private healthcare benefits and career development opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Receive, sort, inspect, clean, disinfect, assemble and prepare instruments for sterilisation.
• Sterilise, store and issue instruments and equipment for theatre and endoscopy.
• Monitor instrument repairs and ensure correct functioning of sterilising equipment.
• Pack linen, instruments and consumables for sterilisation.
• Complete tracking systems accurately.

Job description

This permanent full-time post sits in the sterile services department (SSD) at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, supporting the theatre team. The work centres on receiving, cleaning, sterilising, storing and issuing reusable surgical instruments and equipment, including theatre and endoscopy kit. Shifts may fall on weekdays between 7am and 9pm or on Saturdays from 8am to 5pm, across a 37.5-hour week. Training is offered to the right candidate, and a decontamination qualification is desirable rather than required.

What the job involves

• Receive, sort, inspect, clean, disinfect, assemble, prepare, sterilise, store and issue reusable surgical instruments and equipment
• Ensure theatre and endoscopy instrumentation and equipment are correct and ready for use
• Monitor repairs of instruments
• Pack linen, instruments and consumables for sterilisation
• Check the functioning of sterilising and decontamination equipment against manufacturer's instructions
• Complete tracking systems accurately

Skills & knowledge

Nice to have

• Certificate in Decontamination, NVQ level 3 in Decontamination or TVQ level 1 and 2 in Decontamination

• Knowledge of ISO standards
