Job description

The postholder will lead the provision of pastoral, spiritual and religious support to patients and families atMountbatten Hospice. This will include working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to offer adviceon, and the delivery of, interventions to manage spiritual distress.

They will propose, develop and implement a culturally sensitive hospice strategy for pastoral, spiritualand religious support, coordinating and delivering spiritual care education and training and consultation both internally andexternally.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of integrated spiritual support strategies for patients and families, as well as employees and volunteers.

*22.5 hours per week to be worked in accordance with the needs of the service*

Main duties of the job

In conjunction with the Senior Management Team, lead and embed a culture of spiritualcare throughout the hospice services. Ensure that patients, families, employees andvolunteers are supported to explore issues such as loss, hope and meaning in line withorganisational values, vision and mission.

Develop provision and policies for spiritual support, ensuring there are effectivemechanisms for monitoring and evaluating service provision and that practice meets beststandards.

Lead on pastoral, spiritual and religious education across all employees and volunteersregarding all areas of the hospice service provisions. To engage with the local populationto offer appropriate education opportunities.

Offer personally, and by co-operation as appropriate, full sacramental ministry and non-liturgical prayer and pastoral care within the hospice and in the community as required.This duty will include working (or making appropriate arrangements) for key religious,multi-faith, and non-faith-based celebrations, including all major festivals.

Job responsibilities

Key Tasks:

To build and sustain effective relationships and engagement with a wide range ofcolleagues, and other stakeholders, including clinical partners and educators.

To coordinate the provision of spiritual support, including non-denominational and non-liturgical worship, in relation to assessed support plans for patients, carers and families.This will include engagement with local partners to deliver specific spiritual care to ourpatients, carers and families as well as employees and volunteers.

To lead the development of coherent patient and carer pathways for spiritual distresswhich integrate both inpatient and community provision.

To assess and develop spiritual care support to meet the needs of patients with a rangeof problems, of differing severity and complexity.

To ensure the provision of relevant spiritual support presence to patients and familiesduring the last moments of life (this is a 24/7 requirement for the in-patients).

To contribute to data analysis and report writing to inform external commissioners/stakeholders, the Senior Management Team and the Board of Trustees as appropriate.

Person Specification
Abilities
  • Ability to lead an education programme for spiritual support, including planning, promoting, delivering and evaluating the programme
  • Ability to demonstrate emotional resilience to work in palliative care
  • Able to support others from a range of faiths and cultures
  • Able to manage and support a team of volunteers
Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and can communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Counselling and listening skills
  • Computer literacy including Word, Excel and Outlook
Experience
  • Clergy/Minister or Authorised Lay Worker with at least 3 years experience as an incumbent or equivalent
  • Experience of ministry in a healthcare setting
  • Experience and licensed to prepare and lead Holy Communion, weddings, funerals and blessings
  • Experience of collaborative working across faiths
  • Experience of working with loss, dying, death and bereavement
Other
  • Current Driving Licence
  • Use of a vehicle, with insurance for business purposes
  • Be prepared to assist with Hospice fundraising
  • Support and adopting of Mountbattens Values
Qualifications
  • Degree/Diploma in Theology/palliative care
  • Qualified spiritual leader within a recognised faith such as Churches Together in Britain and Ireland
  • Ordination training or licensed pastoral/religious leader of faith community
