Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Sheffield Stroke Speech & Language Therapy team as a Speech & Language therapy assistant within the Stroke pathway based at SPARC.

The successful candidate will assist the Speech & Language Therapist/s in providing therapy to a defined population of adults with communication, cognitive and/or swallowing difficulties.

Main duties of the job

Your input will provide cover to patients across the stroke pathway but primarily you will provide cover in the Stroke Pathway Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre (SPARC). You will work under the direction of a Speech and Language Therapist and will be involved in communication therapy programmes, swallowing therapy programmes, multidisciplinary team working, staff and carer training, as well as having general duties within the team.

Qualifications
  • NVQ level 3 in a relevant area or equivalent knowledge and/or experience
  • Knowledge & practical experience of adults in a caring environment:
  • Able to communicate effectively with carers/families
  • Computer literate – including basic software packages e.g. Word processing, Power Point, Excel
  • Understanding of client confidentiality
  • Ability to use own initiative
  • A basic understanding of: The communication process. Language disorders. Non-verbal communication. Total communication. Visual support. High tech systems. Low tech systems. Modifying language input
  • Knowledge of Symbol software digital camera and camcorder-related software, scanner
Experience
  • Experience of, and ability to, work as part of a team.
  • Ability to relate to the client group/s.
  • Ability to interpret therapy programmes.
  • Ability to devise new activities to enable client to reach goals.
  • Experience of working in a hospital/care environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of working with people with long term medical conditions.
