Job description

Are you interested in working in the Speech and Language Therapy team?

We currently have an opportunity to work with adults who require support with communication, eating and drinking, and swallowing.

Our Speech and Language Therapy Assistant post is part-time and will be based at The Royal Derby Hospital, working across the stroke wards, with a range of patients.

Please note: It is Trust policy that for posts that are for a time-limited period, applicants who are currently employed by an NHS organisation will only be appointed on a secondment basis and should have approval from their line manager before applying. Applicants who are not employed by an NHS organisation will receive a fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the SLT in providing a clinical service (assessment and treatment) to a SLT caseload.
  2. Weekly assistance in the video fluoroscopy clinic.
  3. Carry out programmes of therapy under the supervision of the SLT within a clinical team.
  4. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records in line with RCSLT professional and Trust standards.
  5. Participate in training in the area of clinical experience.
  6. Demonstrate duties to new starters and less experienced SLTAs, and other support staff.
  7. Understand the rationale behind therapy tasks and activities set by the SLT based on basic theory of speech language development/breakdown.
  8. Develop a working knowledge of relevant procedures including safeguarding for children and adults.

Patient Care Responsibilities:
  1. Assist in the planning and delivery of SLT interventions.
  2. Run therapy groups under the direction of a SLT.
  3. Make modifications within programmes to suit clients or circumstances.
  4. Adapt practice to meet individual patient’s circumstances, including due regard for cultural, linguistic, and cognitive differences.
  5. Advise and support health, social care, and other support staff on how to deliver SLT programmes.
  6. Ensure that clients are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.
