Main Roles and Responsibilities
- Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive speech and language therapy services in various settings, including clinics, schools, and children’s centres, to improve or maintain health, function, learning potential, independence, and quality of life of children.
- Manage a caseload of individuals (usually aged 0-25 years) with diverse needs and disabilities, including neurological, coordination, sensory processing, attention, and behavioral issues, maintaining clinical records.
- Develop and participate in creating products and services, including training, therapy programs, and professional development activities.
1. Clinical – Assessment and Treatment Planning
- Prioritize and manage a caseload and ongoing tasks.
- Conduct assessments and treatments in appropriate settings.
- Perform specialist assessments using advanced clinical reasoning and knowledge of child development.
- Use assessment tools to evaluate function concerning self-care, development, physical, sensory, and motor skills.
- Analyze assessment results to determine conditions and set OT goals.
- Develop and implement treatment plans, including therapy sessions and programs for care or education settings.
- Re-evaluate and adapt treatment plans as needed, and discharge when appropriate.
2. Clinical – Interventions and Treatments
- Plan and deliver a range of child-centered interventions, both individual and group.
- Re-evaluate and adapt treatment programs based on progress and needs.
- Select appropriate treatment approaches based on evidence-based practice.
- Monitor intervention effectiveness.
3. Clinical – Analytical / Judgmental Skills
- Interpret complex assessment results to accurately judge conditions and contribute to diagnoses.
- Identify and set OT goals within care plans.
- Choose and implement suitable treatment methods based on best practices.
- Monitor intervention outcomes.
- Refer to other professionals or agencies when necessary.
4. Clinical – Communication
- Support and advise parents, carers, and schools about OT needs, adjusting language for understanding.
- Communicate effectively with children and families, using non-verbal and augmentative communication as needed.
- Handle sensitive information with empathy and professionalism.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and provide reports for inter-agency use.
- Participate in meetings and develop MDT plans for transitions and discharges.
5. Human Resources and Development
- Adhere to professional codes and standards.
- Maintain accountability for work quality.
- Engage in supervision, appraisal, and reflection.
- Manage projects, develop resources, and provide training and presentations.
6. Health, Safety, and Security
- Ensure a safe environment in all settings.

- Manage and maintain therapy equipment safely.
7. Policy and Service Development
- Contribute to policy and service development within the OT team and broader therapy group.
- Participate in clinical audits and resource planning.
