Main Roles and Responsibilities
- Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive speech and language therapy services in various settings, including clinics, schools, and children’s centres, to improve or maintain health, function, learning potential, independence, and quality of life for children.
- Manage a caseload of individuals (usually aged 0-25 years) with diverse needs and disabilities, including neurological, coordination, sensory processing, attention, and behavioral issues, maintaining clinical records.
- Develop and participate in creating products and services such as training, group and individual therapy programs, and professional development initiatives.
1. Clinical – Assessment and Treatment Planning
- Prioritize and manage a caseload and ongoing tasks.
- Conduct assessments and treatments in appropriate settings.
- Perform specialist assessments of children with complex presentations using advanced clinical reasoning.
- Use assessment tools to evaluate functions related to self-care, development, physical, sensory, and motor skills.
- Analyze assessment results to determine conditions and set goals.
- Develop and implement treatment plans, re-evaluate, and adapt as needed.
2. Clinical – Interventions and Treatments
- Plan and execute child-centered interventions, both individual and group.
- Re-evaluate and adapt treatment plans regularly.
- Select appropriate treatment approaches based on evidence-based practice.
- Monitor intervention effectiveness.
3. Clinical – Analytical / Judgmental Skills
- Interpret complex assessment results for accurate judgments and diagnoses.
- Set OT goals within overall care plans.
- Refer to other professionals as needed.
4. Clinical – Communication
- Support and advise parents, carers, and schools, adjusting communication for understanding.
- Use non-verbal and augmentative communication as necessary.
- Share sensitive information effectively.
- Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity.
- Communicate with team members and other agencies, including documentation and reports.
5. Human Resources and Development
- Follow ethical and professional standards.
- Be accountable for work quality.
- Engage in supervision and performance reviews.
- Lead projects and develop resources.
- Train and present to parents, carers, and staff.
