Job summary

Held Health in Sheffield is seeking a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist to provide embedded support across mainstream school settings and therapy sites. The role involves managing a caseload, running groups, advising staff, and delivering staff training.

Experience in autism assessments (ADOS-2) and working with SLCN in educational settings is highly valued. You will join a multidisciplinary team and contribute to early intervention, school-wide strategies, and family engagement.

Qualifications

• Qualified Speech and Language Therapist, registered with RCSLT and HCPC.

Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist

Sheffield: across various Mainstream school settings and therapy sites.

Full time 37.5hours per week – 4 days on site and 1 remote in term time, more flexible non-term term time

Salary band: £39,959 to £56,515 DOE

We are excited to say this role is based within our team covering Sheffield providing Universal and Targeted Support in school settings and at a clinic location out of term-time. We would especially welcome applicants who have experience in Autism assessments e.g. ADOS training.

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist to provide embedded support, education strategies, group interventions, and staff training to meet the needs of children and young people with SEN and SLCN.

You will be joining an existing national multidisciplinary Held Health team, with a broad range of specialisms such as Occupational Therapists, Play Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatrists etc. You will be part of a local team of SaLTs and OTs dedicated to education services in Sheffield.

This is an exciting opportunity for a therapist who is passionate about developing their career within a supportive environment whilst working collaboratively, managing your own caseload of settings. The role is primarily about early intervention, consultation and building the school's capacity to support children with SEN and SLCN.

Key Responsibilities

• Observe pupils in context using observation tools and screeners to identify emerging communication needs in the school environment and identify those requiring referral to other SaLT services.
• Advise teachers and SENCOs by writing recommendations or modelling practical strategies for individual pupils, groups and classes.
• Run or jointly deliver targeted groups, for example vocabulary, narrative/storytelling, language development or social communication interventions.
• Coach and train staff in identifying SLCN, adapting communication, delivering interventions and monitoring progress.
• Audit the school's communication environment, looking at things such as classroom language, visual supports, instructions, routines and accessibility.
• Focus on whole-school approaches and communication-friendly environments rather than individual therapeutic needs.
• Co-design and review interventions with school staff, looking at functional outcomes such as participation, understanding, expressive language and interaction.
• Work with parents/carers, including advice, strategies, resources, workshops and helping families understand how strategies can be used consistently at home and school.
• Help to develop the offer in schools including writing and preparing training and resources.
• Participate in carrying out individual Autism assessments as part of our broader service and neurodevelopmental assessment pathway out of term-time. This may include some parent interview information-gathering appointments or carrying out ADOS-2 assessments.
• Maintain accurate record keeping including reports, audits, training logs and intervention plans where required.
• Participate in evidence-based practice, staying up-to-date with the latest research and developments in paediatric speech and language therapy.

Who We’re Looking For

Qualifications

A recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy (e.g., BSc or MSc) and registered with the RCSLT and HCPC

Experience

Background in children's SLCN including DLD, neurodevelopmental conditions (autism or ADHD) or mental health.

• Experience in LA, education roles or working in mainstream schools.
• Designing universal and targeted interventions that are suitable for reducing barriers to access in the classroom and school environments.
• ADOS or experience carrying out autism assessments.
• Car driver and/or ability to flexibly travel to different sites across the week in Sheffield is essential. Travel expense scheme.

Skills:

• Strong clinical skills in paediatric speech and language assessment and therapy.
• Ability to create and implement individualised or holistic intervention plans.
• Clinical reasoning and decision making such as environmental adaptations following functional assessments or classroom audits.
• Confident to deliver training, facilitate workshops and build effective consultative relationships with school staff.
• Knowledge of SEN and the DfE's plan for inclusion and integration of SaLTs working collaboratively and sensitively with educators.
• Proven excellent communication skills, with CYP, school staff to support children and their families and within multidisciplinary teams.
• Organisational skills to manage a varied caseload.
