Join the Royal Marsden as a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist in a dynamic team providing vital assessment and treatment for oncology patients. An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the dynamic, motivated Speech and Language Therapy Team at the Royal Marsden, in this post based in Sutton. This exciting role involves the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of communication and swallowing difficulties with a range of oncology patients, across the lifespan. The majority of the role covers head and neck cancer as well as other tumour groups, including lung and neuro-oncology. You will be working alongside your SLT and other AHP colleagues in our multiprofessional structure. You will be supported by members of our excellent team and have the opportunity to achieve and enhance competencies in communication and swallowing disorders. We have a well-established supervision and support structure. There are regular journal clubs, opportunities for research and for further developing clinical skills such as videofluoroscopy and FEES.

The Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), provides a high quality cost effective SLT service for the patient with cancer. As a qualified practitioner, the postholder is a source of knowledge and expertise for patients, relatives and colleagues of all disciplines. With the support of the Band 7 SLT, they willprovide specialist assessment and treatment to patients in the acute setting with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. The post holder will work as part of the SLT team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by the band 7 SLT.

To assess, differentially diagnose and manage patients across the lifespan, with acquired swallowing and communication disorders, including voice as a result of their oncology diagnosis or treatment, under the support/ supervision of a senior SLT as appropriate.
To manage and prioritise a defined in-patient caseload independently with support and supervision from more senior SLTs appropriate to level of competence, and to manage and prioritise own workload including balance between administrative and clinical duties.
Developing and implementing individual specialised therapeutic rehabilitationprogrammes specific to patient’s needs based on assessment using a patient centred, evidence based, problem solving approach

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
