Job Description
Job purpose:
- To provide a speech and language therapy service to adults with acquired communication, cognitive and/or swallowing problems.
- To offer neurorehabilitation in a residential setting to adult clients, providing intervention on an individual or group basis as required.
- To provide specialist speech, language and swallowing assessments and neurorehabilitation to clients on the stroke pathway, adhering to local and governmental policies.
- To provide assessments and neurorehabilitation to out-patients as needed.
- To advise clients, families, and staff on managing dysphagia.
- To contribute to monitoring and achieving relevant standards.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Leading and managing a specialist SLT team in a new, state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre.
- Contributing to the development of a high-quality SLT service.
- Providing specialist dysphagia assessment and intervention using senior practitioner competencies.
- Delivering 1:1 and group SLT sessions and creating communication and swallowing guidance for the wider MDT.
- Conducting mental capacity assessments independently or with other professionals.
- Advocating for clients in report writing, CHC forms, and complex DST meetings.
- Collaborating with senior management on service development, quality improvement, and clinical audits.
- Providing supervision and advice to SLT staff and students.
- Participating in recruitment processes within the SLT department and wider staffing team.
- Managing team performance, sickness absence, and appraisals according to QEF policy.
- Promoting learning and reflective practice, including training and development.
- Working with catering, management, and dietitians to ensure high standards of catering in line with the IDDSI framework.
Requirements:
- Speech and Language Therapy qualification.
- Experience in assessing and treating speech, language, and communication disorders.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with clients, families, and colleagues.
- Empathy, patience, and understanding when working with individuals with communication difficulties.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Enhanced DBS check within the last 12 months or willingness to obtain one.
