We currently have two permanent posts available to join our team of fourPalliative Medicine Consultants, Specialty Doctors and Training Grade Doctors.We welcome applicants with a wide variety of backgrounds and previousexperience. The most important attributes are a passion for a holistic approachto care, teamwork and good communication.
The Specialty Doctors at St Michaels Hospice work within theinpatient unit and the community/Hospice at Home team, but with the support ofthe Consultants in Palliative Medicine they provide clinical support to allmembers of the multidisciplinary team.

The medical team at St MichaelsHospice works alongside nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists,social workers, chaplains, counsellors, complementary therapists to provide ourinpatient, community, hospice at home and living well services.
This is an ideal opportunity for a doctor with a special interestin Palliative Medicine to join the hospice at an exciting time of growth. Weare looking for someone who is highly motivated, willing to learn and flexiblein their approach to support the multidisciplinary team. St Michaels iscommitted to providing all clinical staff with clinical supervision, CPDopportunities and other educational/developmental opportunities.
Theindividual pay rate will be determined according to experience and anydevelopment required. An on-callsupplement will be paid based on the frequency of on-call and the specificarrangements needed by the Hospice.
St Michaels Hospice is a 10-beddedindependent hospice, which has provided palliative care to the local communitysince 1992. It has provided specialist palliative care to adults with cancerand non-malignant conditions since the appointment of consultants in 2005. Theservice is consultant led, with integrated working with Hampshire Hospitals NHSFoundation Trust (HHFT) hospital and community palliative care teams, formingpart of the North and Mid Hampshire Hospice and Palliative Care Service.
As part of Palliative Care Multi-DisciplinaryTeam, the post holder will deliver high quality professional care to patientsand relatives within the Hospice and Community as needed. You will work closelywith the Clinical Team to ensure we offer the highest standards of care,developing services to meet the changing needs of our patients.
Main Duties andResponsibilities
Responsibilities
To work with the Consultants inPalliative Medicine to deliver high quality palliative care.
Undertake medical assessment,diagnosis and management of patients in hospice / community.
Initiate appropriate medical careand prescribe appropriately in line with policies and guidelines.
Assess new planned and emergencyadmission patients and work with MDT to initiate appropriate investigations andtreatment.
Any other medical duties inemergency situations.
Communication with patientsrelatives and carers regarding clinical condition and management plan. To beinvolved in family meetings as required.
To work as part of the MDT andcommunicate clearly with colleagues. To attend weekly Specialist PalliativeCare MDT meeting.
Communicate unexpected changes inpatients condition to Consultant in charge and, when required, to on callmedical staff.
To generate a weekend handovermedical report at end of week.
Participate in the St Michaels1/5 non-resident first on-call rota on call rota with on-call consultantsupport.
Record clinical notes in a timelyand accurate fashion.
Review and update drug records,working with the Pharmacist. Completionof TTO prescriptions and patient-held drug record cards.
Completion of death certificatesand cremation certificates when required.
Co-ordinate with referrers andother healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.
Provide advice and teaching tomembers of the MDT and visiting professionals.
Participate in education events,in particular medical events.
To meet requirements ofappropriate Royal College for CPD with involvement in CPD appropriate tospeciality: Keeping up to date with medical developments, new drugs, treatmentsand medications, including complementary medicine relevant to palliative care.
Participate in annual appraisaland job plan review and revalidation process.
Personal and professional development
The post-holder will be required to keephimself/herself fully up-to date in their relevant area of practice and to beable to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Royal College of Physiciansand the GMC. The post-holder will receive an annual appraisal by a Consultantin Palliative medicine as required by the GMC and fulfil the requirementsnecessary for Revalidation. Professional or study leave will be granted at thediscretion of St. Michaels Hospice, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditionsof Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities,relevant CPD courses and other appropriate personal development needs. Supportand guidance is available on site from the Consultant and colleagues, andthrough involvement in the training and development of clinical staff, the postholder will gain personal development opportunities. Regular clinicalsupervision will be provided.
Proposed job plan
Work sessions are based on P.A.s of 4hrs.The job plan will be reviewed regularly to ensure it still meets the need ofboth the service and the post holder.There is overlap between medical staff to ensure continuity of care andeffective communication. A Consultant is always available for advice andsupport, in addition to regular patient rounds. The role will provide the postholder opportunities to work in the hospice, the community and in the hospitalto gain experience of palliative medicine across a range of settings.

Clinical governance
The post-holder will be expected toparticipate actively in clinical governance activities, including clinicalaudit, educational activities and quality improvement activities.
General Responsibilities
Work to maintain the values,vision and aims of St. Michaels Hospice.
Additional Duties In discussion with the line manager undertake work,as and when required, in support of St. Michaels Hospice as an organisation.
Public Relations Represent St. Michaels Hospice in the community andpublic domain as appropriate.
Undertake all statutory andmandatory training, as required.
Be conversant with and adhere to St. Michaels Hospice Policies andProcedures.
