Job overview

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic specialty doctor to work within our new community residential adult Rehabilitation unit (Penrose unit) within the London Borough of Lewisham. This is a new post which has been created due to recent funding within the SLP rehab pathway.

This community rehabilitation project will be provided jointly by SLPCC and Penrose (voluntary sector provider) and will be based in the London borough of Lewisham. It is based on a similar model operational in Lambeth (Turrets)

The job is currently being advertised as a 4 PA fixed term role for a period of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post holder are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership and to act as the main psychiatrist for the Penrose service.

Close liaison with other teams within the SLP pathway especially Heather close and ERT and our secondary and primary care teams will be a key part of the role. You will need to work closely with GPs and other stakeholders .

You will be expected to work ideally for two continuous days of the week to provide consistency and continuity of care. The service users at Penrose remain under the care of their existing community teams and so the RC responsibility will remain with the consultant psychiatrists in the respective CMHTs. This also means that in the days you are not at Penrose (the three days per week, as well as annual leave etc) you will not need to organise cross cover as there are existing cover arrangements in place.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team.

• To provide assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team

· Using your expertise to provide advice, liaising closely with GPs and other stakeholders, and providing assessment of complex presentations and creating appropriate management plans

• To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness

• To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments

• To act as a source of support, advice, and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals

• In conjunction with the Team Leader, will help to represent the unit at CAG and care pathway meetings and other internal and external meetings where needed.

• To keep up to date with all developments in research and treatment around acute care pathways and inpatient mental health care

Person specification
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Experience in relevant specialties such as in patient, old age psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry OR Rehabilitation Psychiatry OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status and under S12 OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Should have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
