The Specialty Doctor will participate in the ENT Rota. Based at RAEI, Wigan but will undertake duties at other Hospitals in the Trust when required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in the ENT on-call rota and actively contribute to the delivery of the ENT service within the directorate and to maintaining a high standard of care. The ENT service is based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan but there are other Trust sites where specialty commitments may take place. The post holder will be expected to play a full part in complying with all aspects of clinical governance.

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties of the Post

  • Generally responsible for in-patient treatment under the supervision of the Consultants. The fellow will undertake out-patient clinics and theatre lists as directed and deal with emergencies as required.
  • To answer without undue delay any request for assistance from the Casualty Officer if he wishes to refer a patient for opinion.
  • Checking Radiology and Pathology reports and ensuring that appropriate action is taken.
  • To personally contact laboratory technicians and radiographers on-call when they are required in cases of emergency.
  • Interviewing relatives of patients as required and when necessary request permission for an autopsy.
  • Liaison with family practitioners.
  • Notify General Practitioners, by telephone, of any death.
  • Notification of deaths to H.M. Coroner as determined by prior discussion with Consultant.
  • Notification to "Proper Officer" of Notifiable or Infectious Diseases.
  • 8 clinical sessions to include Outpatient and Theatre work.

Study and Teaching

The following are available:

  • Post-graduate programmes arranged by the Department at the Education Centre or on the E.N.T. wards at RAEI and neighbouring hospitals.
  • In-post clinical teaching and instruction.
  • Lectures and slide discussions.
  • Medical Institute and Divisional Libraries.
  • Study leave and courses are available. (Applications must be made at least six weeks prior to the period of absence).
  • Regular Clinical Meetings.

Research

A doctor wishing to engage in a particular project should inform the Consultants concerned. Research involving the actual patient must have the consent of the Ethical Committee.

Administrative

Junior medical staff are encouraged to discuss problems with their Consultant and may attend Divisional Meetings by arrangement.

Details of the Rota

The Specialty Doctor will work a 1 : 5 rota (2 nd On-Call) with prospective cover the rota is EWTD and New Deal compliant. An additional two sessions will be paid for participation in the on-call rota (10 + 2).

Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • PG qualifications equivalent to MD or FRCS
Experience
  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: Good clinical care, Maintain good medical practice, Good relationships and communication with patients, Good working relationships with colleagues, Good teaching and training, Professional behaviour and probity, Delivery of good acute clinical care
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in a relevant specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competences by start date of post.
  • Applicants knowledge is up to date and fit to practise safely.
  • Demonstrate skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, which could be demonstrated by one of the following: Undertaken graduate medical training in English , Scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes.
  • Experience of Otolaryngology
  • Publications or evidence of completed research or audit activity.
Knowledge
  • Acute Care Safe: Up-to date ALS or able to demonstrate equivalency competence. Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Know when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Show aptitude for practical skills required in the job.
