Job summary

Cygnet Hospital Bierley in Bradford seeks an experienced Specialty Doctor to join Shelley Ward, a 16-bed male low secure unit. You will be fully involved as a practicing psychiatrist, supported by a Consultant and a multidisciplinary team, with a clear pathway to Consultant through our portfolio programme.

The role involves routine medical and psychiatric care, liaison with external agencies, and participation in MDT meetings.

Qualifications

• Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent)
• A minimum of 1 year experience of psychiatry
• Experienced & knowledgeable in general adult psychiatry
• Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice
• First-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients
• Committed to continued professional development
• Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Responsibilities

• Provide routine medical and psychiatric care including initial clerking and mental state examination of newly admitted patients
• Assess, investigate, diagnose and treat inpatients under Consultant supervision
• Maintain communication with ward staff, mental health professionals and external agencies
• Participate in weekly ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings (CPA, Tribunal hearings, Section 117)
• Maintain full records of medical and psychiatric assessments and interventions
• Prepare discharge summaries per company policies
• Attend mandatory training (BLS, ILS, PMVA, Moving and Handling, Infection Control, H&S)
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff and other stakeholders
• Participate in the duty doctor on-call rota

We are seeking an experienced full-time Speciality Doctor who will work at Cygnet Hospital Bierley and provide psychiatric care on Shelley Ward our 16 bed male low secure forensic unit.

The unit provides recovery based treatment for men whose mental health needs result in continuing and ongoing disturbed or challenging behaviour and who may have a dual diagnosis. Many of the service users have a significant forensic history and require close liaison with external agencies including the Ministry of Justice and MAPPA.

The aim of the service is to support individuals to transition towards independent living, or the least restrictive environment which may include step down to a locked or open rehabilitation setting as the next stage in their recovery.

The service benefits from true multi-disciplinary input including a Consultant Psychiatrist, Forensic Psychologist, Occupational Therapist and Social Worker.

You will be fully invo
lved as a practising psychiatrist - while being fully supported by a Consultant Psychiatrist and first-class multidisciplinary team.

Main duties and Responsibilities

• Provide routine medical and psychiatric support including initial clerking and mental state examination of newly admitted patients


• Carry out the assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment under Consultant supervision of inpatients of the unit.


• Maintain good communication with ward nursing staff, mental health professionals and other agencies as required


• Participate in weekly ward rounds and other multidisciplinary meetings, including CPA, Tribunal hearings & Section 117 meetings


• Maintenance of full records of medical and psychiatric assessments and interventions


• Preparing discharge summaries in line with company policies and guidelines


• Attending all mandatory training e.g. BLS, ILS, Breakaway training/PMVA training, Moving and Transferring, Infection Control, H&S.


• Communicating effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports.


• Participating in the duty doctor frequency on call rota .

Our portfolio pathway programme

This programme will help you develop the skills you need to progress to Consultant level - and you'll rotate within wards/services to gain valuable experience across various subspecialties.

You’ll also have an educational supervisor to review your progress and oversee your development - and you’ll receive support with MRCPsych exams.

We are looking for someone who is
