Job description

Job Title: Specialist Technician - Novel and Compound Glass Facility

The Novel and Compound facility Glass part of the Zepler Cleanrooms at the University of Southampton is creating the next generation of advanced materials for optical, photonic, and electronic applications.

About the Role

You will be part of the Sustainable Electronic Technologies group within the Electronics and Computer Science department, managing the Novel and Compound facilities. Our team specializes in developing chalcogenide and layered materials, from two-dimensional structures to bulk glasses, using bespoke equipment developed in-house. We foster a friendly, collaborative, and supportive environment, focusing on cutting-edge research and the development of our team members.

Responsibilities
  1. Operate and maintain equipment used in fabricating materials, including gloveboxes, tube furnaces, annealing furnaces, Chemical Vapour Deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition, and other custom and characterization systems.
  2. Support the production of chalcogenide precursors and glasses, working with processes unique to the University of Southampton.
  3. Attend training and research technical professional development events.
  4. Ensure safety and compliance in all laboratory activities.
Candidate Requirements
  • Proven laboratory experience with the ability to plan and document work progress.
  • A degree in a science-related subject or equivalent industry experience.
  • Desirable: Basic knowledge of material synthesis and glass fabrication processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving, time management, communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Additional Information

The position offers a 35-hour workweek from 9 AM to 5 PM, with full training provided.
