Job summary

Oldham Council seeks a Specialist Teaching Assistant to support children and young people with hearing impairment across educational settings, including Early Years, under the guidance of the Advisory Teacher of the Deaf. The role focuses on inclusion, accessible materials and personalised work programmes.

The post is hybrid, 32.5 hours/week during term time plus 5 days, with a fixed-term contract of 3 years. Applicants should have BSL Stage 1/2 or willingness to attain, plus car access.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills with which to build and maintain effective relationships with all CYP, staff and families.
  • Sound knowledge, skills, and direct experience of working with CYP with a hearing loss. Early Years experience is beneficial.
  • A good standard of literacy with the ability to contribute to reports.
  • Minimum qualification in BSL Stage 1 (or relevant experience) and BSL stage 2 or willingness to attain.
  • The use of a car is necessary to work in settings throughout the borough.

Responsibilities

  • To work with identified pupils to help promote inclusion and to overcome barriers to learning because of their hearing loss.
  • To work collaboratively with service staff, school staff, families, pupils and other professionals under the direction of the Qualified Teachers of the Deaf.
  • To supervise, assist and support pupils to access learning activities, through your knowledge of the curriculum and knowledge of how pupils who have a hearing loss learn.
