Job summary

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the Snowdon Neurological Rehabilitation Unit and Kite Unit. The role is centered on autonomous assessment and intervention for adults with complex communication and swallowing needs following brain injury.

You will work within a dynamic MDT, supervise junior colleagues, and contribute to service development while supporting patient education and family/carer involvement.

Job description

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join the team on Snowdon Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (SNRU) & Kite Unit. SNRU delivers level 2 neuro-rehabilitation to 14 inpatients. Kite unit delivers specialist neuropsychiatric rehabilitation to 10 inpatients.

As an autonomous practitioner, you will manage a varied caseload, providing high-quality specialist assessment and intervention for adults with communication and swallowing needs arising from complex acquired or traumatic brain injuries. In addition, you will provide patient/carer education, alongside supporting junior colleagues and contributing to service development on SNRU. You will be supported by the clinical lead inpatient SLT.

Working as part of a dynamic MDT, you will contribute to clinical decision-making, person centred goal setting and rehabilitation, ensuring safe and effective care throughout the patient journey.

This role offers the opportunity to consolidate and extend specialist skills in neuro rehabilitation while shaping high-quality SLT provision within a supportive and forward-thinking team.

Main duties of the job

• To work as an autonomous practitioner, providing specialist level of assessment, diagnosis, and provision of timely intervention and management of communication and/ or swallowing problems as a member of Snowdon Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (SNRU) and Kite Unit Therapy team.
• To collaborate and liaise with MDT colleagues to provide co-ordinated care to patients on SNRU/Kite Unit.
• To provide clinical supervision and/or line management, where appropriate to Band 5 SLT, band 3 and 4 Rehabilitation Assistants.
• Placement education role for SLT students.
• To provide clinical supervision and/or line management, where appropriate to Band 5 SLT, band 3 and 4 Rehabilitation Assistants.
• To contribute to client information, manage priorities, organise equipment/resources and liaise with other SLTs about continuing care following discharge.
• To contribute to the prioritisation of new admission and current caseload management to ensure that priority, high risk patients are seen urgently, following locally devised systems / timescales.
• To contribute, wherever possible, to the administrative processes that ensure the most efficient service delivery for clients.
