Band 6: Bowel Cancer Screening, Specialist Screening Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Bristol and Weston Bowel Cancer Screening Centre which covers Bristol and North Somerset, serving a population of over 900,000. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated nurse to join our screening team. You will be based at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, but will be required to work across multiple sites, including Bristol Royal Infirmary, South Bristol Community Hospital and Southmead Hospital.

We are looking for a hardworking, flexible and committed individual to join our team, providing high quality care to all screening participants. You must be a registered nurse with a current registration. You will be responsible for supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme across Bristol and North Somerset in conjunction with the Lead Nurse/team members. You must be able to work effectively in a team and as an autonomous practitioner, managing your own caseload of patients. You will be responsible for undertaking nurse led clinics, this includes patient assessment, providing information, preparation and support of those undergoing endoscopic or radiological investigation within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic team player. The role is varied and ranges from conducting nurse led clinics, attending colonoscopy sessions, processing histology outcomes and providing results including cancer diagnosis to supporting patients throughout the screening process and engaging in health promotion.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate sensitive and complex information to both patients and colleagues, including breaking significant news. The post holder will have a shared responsibility to meet the Trust, BCSP and national targets, be able to prioritise and manage their own workload and work as a team to ensure the smooth running of the service. Training will be provided for use of the BCSP IT system.

Bristol and Weston Bowel Cancer Screening programme is based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary Hospital but the post holder will be required to travel to other sites (South Bristol Community Hospital and Southmead Hospital ) as necessary.

Previous experience and knowledge of working in the following areas are desirable but not essential: screening services, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pre assessment, or oncology.

Additionally you must have good IT skills as this post also includes daily data entry into a national database. Specialist training will be provided for use of the Bowel Cancer Screening IT system. Some experience in teaching or health promotion is also an advantage, but not essential.
