Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an experienced peri-operative practitioner to co-ordinate activities within the peri-operative environment and support both qualified and unqualified staff, overseeing patient care assessments and developing, implementing and evaluating care programmes.

  • Must have documented interventional radiology competencies for the role.
  • Willingness to undertake the training programme and CPD to expand competencies.
  • Ability to develop evidence-based practice and lead a peri-operative team.

Responsibilities

  • Co‑ordinate activities within the peri‑operative environment and ensure effective communication.
  • Assess patient care needs and develop, implement and evaluate care programmes.
  • Assist deputy/team leader in leading and teaching peri‑operative teams across 24 hours.
  • Promote quality practice and lead sub-specialties within Interventional Radiology.

As an experienced practitioner the jobholder will co‑coordinate activities within the peri-operative environment ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified staff within the department. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting deputy/team leader in leading and teaching the peri-operative teams throughout the 24 hour period.

The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the peri-operative team and ensuring effective management of the department in the absence of the deputy/team Leaders.

The jobholder will work within an environment for peri-operative patients

In order to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will have successfully attained and be able provide documented confirmation of all required interventional radiology competencies for the role as detailed in the addendum. Alternatively, under Annex 21 working towards (up to a maximum of 2 years) undertaking the required training programme and

competencies to enable you to undertake the role, you will be supported to develop an extensive range of competencies and specialist knowledge within the discipline through extensive practical experience, in house training and structured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD).

You'll be involved in perioperative patient care, including administering IV medication and post-operative care such as sheath removal. The role requires close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including consultants, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals. A new radiology development pathway is available to support your growth, helping you gain the competencies needed for the Band 6 Specialist Peri-Operative Practitioner role, with training lasting up to 24 months. As you progress, you’ll be able to work on call across both sites. This role is ideal for those pursuing a career in radiology theatres, offering the chance to gain essential competencies under the guidance of experienced colleagues. You'll build specialist knowledge, preparing you for a Senior Peri-Operative Practitioner role. You’ll deliver high-quality patient care while ensuring efficient use of resources. After completing the training, you will lead a sub‑specialty within Interventional Radiology, such as neurology, tissue viability, or infection control. You'll work with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient care, theatre performance, and quality, while also contributing to the evaluation of pre- and post-operative care. Regular updates with the senior nursing team are also included in the role.
