Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking an Occupational Therapist for a fixed-term 8-month contract based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The post involves autonomous practice within the critical care OT team, collaborating closely with physiotherapy and other clinicians to deliver patient-centred interventions.

The successful candidate will manage a complex caseload in a fast-paced setting, contribute to service improvement and student education, and hold HCPC registration with a degree or diploma

Job description

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of the surgical and critical care AHP team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary for a fixed term period of 8 months. We are looking for a forward thinking and motivated Occupational therapist to help develop the emerging role for Occupational therapy within critical care. The Occupational Therapy staff work very closely with physiotherapy colleagues to provide comprehensive, patient-centred interventions.

The post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner in managing a complex clinical caseload, and as an effective and efficient partner in the multi-disciplinary team. They will share responsibility for day to day operational issues within the Occupational Therapy Team, and be involved in service improvement, staff development, supervision, clinical effectiveness and student education.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate sound clinical reasoning and core Occupational Therapy skills and be able to apply these in treatment of patients recovering from critical illness and surgery. They will be able to prioritise and work in a busy and fast-paced environment, and demonstrate a self-motivating and dynamic approach.

The successful candidate will have a diploma/degree on Occupational Therapy and a post graduate experience. The post required PVG scheme membership/Disclosure Scotland check and HCPC registration.

All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

• Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary
• Fixed-Term Contract for 8 months
• Full-time position (36 hours per week)
• Shift pattern for this post are Monday to Friday, 08:00 - 16:00

Key Responsibilities

• Is professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including direct and indirect patient care, within scope of practice, as per HCPC guidelines
• Assess capacity, gains valid consent and has the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent.
• Using available evidence base, act independently to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, treat and progress patient care, to maximise functional independence and rehabilitation potential including decision making regarding discharge from care.
• Manages own identified complex caseload of patients effectively and efficiently.
• Works as a key member of a multi-professional team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care.
• Maintain documentation, records and accurate statistical information to reflect care provided and meet professional standards, including computerised systems, where applicable, in accordance with RCOT and Service standards
• Develops a robust framework to monitor and evaluate standards of care and clinical outcomes – benchmarking with similar services.
• Identifies gaps and service pressures within the OT/PT team, discusses, identifies and implements remedial actions with the Team Leader.
• Actively promotes and markets the OT Service.
• Identifies and actively leads areas within quality improvement, such as audits, journal clubs and projects as directed by AHP Team Lead, Clinical Specialist and Professional Lead.
• To attend staff and service meetings.
• Any other duties within grade as deemed appropriate by the AHP Team Lead

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

• BSc / Diploma in Occupational Therapy
• Registration with HCPC
• Occupational Health Clearance
• PVG Membership
• Significant post-graduate experience, with previous experience in acute care
• Computer literate including use of e-mail, Microsoft Office and relevant clinical programmes
• Evidence of experience in clinical effectiveness - audit / systematic reviews, research proposals
• Supervisory skill in developing and supporting staff
