Job Description
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
- Monitor, interpret, and advise on ESG laws and sustainability regulations applicable to Anglo American's global operations.
- Develop and implement legal strategies to mitigate risks associated with environmental and social impact compliance across jurisdictions.
- Support internal risk assessments to ensure adherence to sustainability-related legal frameworks and corporate policies.
- Ensure Anglo American adheres to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) legal frameworks across multiple jurisdictions, providing global-level regulatory oversight.
Policy Development & Implementation - Contribute to the development of policies and governance frameworks that align with Anglo American's global sustainability commitments.
- Provide legal oversight on sustainability-related policies, supplier due diligence requirements, and responsible sourcing frameworks, including horizon scanning.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure compliance with voluntary ESG commitments, such as the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) and other industry bodies.
Stakeholder Engagement & Regulatory Liaison - Engage with global regulatory authorities and industry groups on sustainability-related legal compliance.
- Support legal aspects of regulatory submissions, sustainability reporting, and stakeholder engagements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Maintain active relationships with government agencies, NGOs, and sustainability bodies to align Anglo American's regulatory strategy with evolving ESG requirements.
Reporting & Compliance Oversight - Ensure accurate legal oversight of ESG data collection, regulatory disclosures, and sustainability compliance reporting.
- Provide legal guidance on Anglo American's global external ESG reporting obligations under international regulatory frameworks.
- Support internal teams in meeting governance and disclosure requirements for ESG compliance and legal reporting.
Collaboration with Legal & Corporate Functions - Work closely with the Legal Manager: Sustainability Regulatory and Corporate Disputes to provide legal guidance on global sustainability regulatory issues.
- Maintain collaboration with the Head of Legal: Marketing and her team to ensure a coordinated approach to responding to customer information requests in response to applicable legal requirements
- Provide expert legal input to the Legal Principal: Upstream Strategic Mining Regulatory and Permitting to ensure sustainability legal strategies are aligned with global mining and environmental law best practices.
- Actively drive close integration and collaboration with Mining Regulatory and Permitting resources in Group Legal Upstream to ensure alignment of sustainability regulatory compliance with broader mining regulatory frameworks.
Qualifications- Recognized graduate legal qualification relevant to a Group jurisdiction.
- Admitted to practice in a relevant legal jurisdiction.
Technical Skills:- Strong understanding of ESG regulations, sustainability compliance frameworks, and global environmental laws.
- Knowledge of corporate governance, compliance, and risk management related to ESG and sustainability.
- Familiarity with international sustainability reporting standards and regulatory compliance frameworks.
- Understanding of stakeholder engagement, regulatory affairs, and corporate social responsibility.
- Awareness of sustainability risk management and best practices in the mining and natural resources sector.
- Legal expertise in ESG compliance, sustainability law, and global regulatory frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of international ESG-related laws, including mining-specific sustainability obligations.
- Ability to assess legal risks in sustainability strategies and business operations.
