Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking an experienced highway plant operator to support pothole repair and maintenance across the county. You will operate specialist plant, carry out construction tasks, and ensure equipment is inspected and serviced in line with guidelines.

Applicants should hold Level 2 Roadworks, have experience with heavy plant (preferably JCB 4CX), and possess a full UK driving licence with willingness to travel throughout Northumberland.

Qualifications

• Level 2 City & Guilds Craft Certificate in Roadworks (or equivalent).
• Experience operating heavy plant and excavators, ideally JCB 4CX.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across Northumberland.

Responsibilities

• Operate specialist pothole repair and highway maintenance plant across Northumberland.
• Carry out highway maintenance and construction activities, including excavation and repair works.
• Inspect, maintain and service plant and equipment in line with manufacturer guidance.
• Complete associated paperwork, inspections, vehicle checks and work records.
• Work safely in accordance with Health & Safety procedures and risk assessments.
• Support winter maintenance, emergency call-outs and other highway operational activities.

What you'll be doing:

• Operating specialist pothole repair and highway maintenance plant across Northumberland.
• Carrying out highway maintenance and construction activities, including excavation and repair works.
• Inspecting, maintaining and servicing plant and equipment in line with manufacturer guidance.
• Completing associated paperwork, plant inspections, vehicle checks and work records.
• Working safely in accordance with Health & Safety procedures, risk assessments and Chapter 8 requirements.
• Supporting winter maintenance, emergency call-outs and other highway operational activities when required.

What you'll bring:

• Level 2, City & Guilds Craft Certificate in Roadworks, or equivalent relevant qualification.
• Relevant qualifications and experience operating heavy plant and excavators, ideally including JCB 4CX or equivalent machinery.
• Experience in highway maintenance and construction works, including working in a safety-critical environment.
• Full UK driving licence and the ability to travel throughout Northumberland, with flexibility to participate in standby and emergency response arrangements.
