NextPharma Edinburgh is looking for Continuous Improvement (CI) Lead that will own the site’s CI program and pipeline from ideation to implementation. The role will encompass the full breadth of operations, to maximise benefit to the site and business from warehouse & utilities, to manufacturing productivity & packaging OEE, to customer service and product lifecycle management.

Within the site, the Continuous Improvement lead also has responsibility for facilitating and coordinating the EHS and sustainability functions. This part of the role will include responsibility for providing management, oversight, and direction of the Environmental, Health, and Safety and Sustainability programs for the NextPharma Edinburgh site, with a focus on continuous improvement, in collaboration with corporate leads for these functions. Role owner will ensure environmental, health, and safety compliance with regulatory EHS and sustainability requirements, NextPharma policies, standards, and procedures through generation, maintenance, and training for site procedures. Supports Site and Corporate EHS and Sustainability Strategy and Objectives; contributes to development and implementation of site and global EHS and sustainability programs and promotes alignment with local regulatory, site and global requirements.

Role owner promotes a culture of CI, EHS and operational excellence at facility and provides high-quality technical leadership. Provides advice and counsel and communicates critical CI, EHS and sustainability issues to site.

Essential Functions

  • To raise performance levels by establishing improvement culture i.e. raising the capability of teams by focusing on business and manufacturing processes: stabilising, standardising, improving and automation; exposing problems, eliminating them & repeating the cycle, thorough root cause analysis.
  • Driving activities to improve productivity, reduce the cost of poor quality and reduce manufacturing cost i.e. zero waste and defect mindset throughout the supply chain.
  • To systematically reduce risks to employees, products and the environment through risk assessment, rigorous problem solving and establishing robust and effective CAPAs.
  • Support the development and maintenance of overall site EHS and sustainability management systems based on current site policies and legal requirements; to develop and implement site specific policies and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operation of the site and to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the relevant Risk Management processes to identify controls to reduce or eliminate hazards and waste found within the workplace.
  • Ensure waste management is arranged cost effectively and in compliance with all local legal requirements, in partnership with the site Dangerous Goods Advisor and Warehouse Team. Support and drive site sustainability to minimize the site environmental footprint
  • Keep current with all new and pending regulations (EHS and sustainability) that might have an impact upon the business and maintain the relevant Legal Registers.
  • Review and assess all new chemicals and other materials being brought into the site. Maintain and develop the COSHH Management process. Support industrial hygiene monitoring as needed to ensure exposure levels are minimized. Oversee the Emergency Response Plan for NextPharma Edinburgh site.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of management, on safety and environmental issues as they affect current and proposed processes, equipment and procedures and providing HSE advice, training and guidance to operational leaders and their teams.
  • Serve as local expert in safety, health, environmental regulatory issues and direct compliance activities on these matters.
  • Build and maintain local relationships with Regulators and keep local management apprised of developments.

Other Duties

  • Work with site and group leads to establish and implement long and short-term goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures in regard to CI, environmental, health and safety compliance and regulation.
  • Lead site and potentially group CI projects.

Supervision

Reports to site lead for CI, EHS and Sustainability

Qualifications - Required

  • Demonstrated know-how in delivering step change improvement within a regulated operational environment through Lean Leadership/ Lean 6 Sigma/ Operational Excellence methodologies (Qualification from recognized institution in Operational Excellence / Lean Six Sigma preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in safety and/or environmental/ engineering related positions, including knowledge of chemical, pharmaceutical, and/or environmental processes is desired.
  • University or bachelor’s degree in environmental, safety, chemical engineering or other related discipline, (chemistry, physical sciences, biology, toxicology) is desired. (Other degree, health/sciences or significant equivalent work experience in EHS field may suffice.)
  • Experience with pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing including direct expertise in continuous improvement projects
  • Motivated, self-starter with entrepreneurial mindset. Resilient to setbacks and challenges and accustomed to working with sites (all levels) to deliver improvements

Desired

  • Professional certification in related discipline (i.e IOSH, CSP, CIH, CHMM, or CHCM) is preferred.
  • Advanced degree in EHS and sustainability management a plus.
  • Excellent project management, change management, relationship management and interpersonal skills. As well as demonstrated ability to drive & manage multiple large-scale projects in parallel.

Computer skills: Must be competent in the use of MS Office, particularly Excel and Word, e-mail and internet

Literacy and Numeracy: Must be competent in writing reports both for internal use and for customers. Must be competent in the interpretation of analytical data.

Business Presentation Skills: Must be an excellent face-to-face and telephone communicator.
