The Department of Blood Transfusion is seeking to recruit a full-time B6 Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to work as part of a team covering our transfusion laboratories at LGI and SJUH. The service covers four hospitals and two hospices, managing approximately 41,500 units of blood, plasma, and platelets annually. Our team includes Support Workers, Biomedical Scientists, Hospital Transfusion Team members, and Consultants, working to deliver a complex and busy Blood Transfusion service.
Recent developments include the implementation of WinPath Enterprise LIMs and ICE requesting, upgrading analysers (2x Erytra at both sites), and integrating Grifols Blood Typing Manager software. We also use Haemonetics Blood Track software and QPulse for QMS, with plans for future expansion including an Acute Laboratory with Biochemistry and Haematology, and extending Blood Track functionalities.
Our values—Patient-centred, Collaborative, Fair, Accountable, Empowered—guide our work. We uphold personal honesty, integrity, and confidentiality, maintaining HCPC registration and adhering to standards of proficiency. Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to redeploying 'at risk' staff and reserves the right to modify the recruitment process as needed.
Applicants must have an accredited degree in biomedical sciences or equivalent, acceptable to HCPC and IBMS, with extensive practical experience and ongoing CPD. Basic computer skills and familiarity with laboratory databases are essential. Mandatory training must be completed, and willingness to learn in areas like HR, appraisal, and incident investigation is required.
Principal duties include:
Engage in continuous professional development, participate in a 24-hour rota, work across sites, and perform other duties as assigned, following professional and service developments.
Adhere to infection control policies, practice universal precautions, and contribute to a safe working environment.
Comply with policies ensuring equality and non-discrimination in employment and service delivery.
Prioritize CPD, undertake mandatory training, and maintain registration with HCPC.
Interact with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including clinical teams, administrative staff, suppliers, and patients.
Tasks involve prolonged standing or sitting, handling loads up to 20kg, requiring concentration, and working in laboratory environments, possibly across sites.
