Job overview

We invite applications from motivated HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists for a role within the Haematology laboratory at UHSussex. The successful candidate will rotate through all sections of the laboratory across our hospital sites.

Candidates working towards their IBMS Specialist Portfolio are eligible; the full Band 6 post will be awarded upon completion.

The department offers Haematology, Coagulation, Immunohaematology, and Blood Transfusion services, holds ISO 15189 accreditation, and is approved for training by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.

Main duties of the job

The Haematology department operates four sections across two sites. The successful candidate will work across all sections and participate in a 24-hour shift system, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, subject to competency assessment. Additional pay applies for out-of-hours work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Local agreements cover additional payments for outside-standard hours work, including significant shift enhancements. The post requires working out of hours after competency assessment.

Main Duties

  • Extensive knowledge of disease processes and diagnostic test relevance, understanding medical terminology and test requests.
  • Communicating with physicians regarding test suitability and availability of further tests, consulting senior staff when needed.
  • Validating results per SOP, interpreting results with previous data, requesting additional work, and referring complex cases to senior staff.
  • Handling unsuitable samples and requesting repeats as per departmental policy.
  • Communicating complex or sensitive results to clinicians accurately and ensuring proper documentation.
