Job Overview

We are seeking a full-time, enthusiastic, and professional Specialist Biomedical Scientist to work across Haematology & Transfusion within the Derriford Combined Laboratory. The department is embarking on exciting projects, including a new lab build, where staff input is vital.

Applicants should be HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have completed their Specialist Portfolio with advanced technical skills in Haematology disciplines. Knowledge of Blood Bank, Haematology, and Coagulation is essential. Experience with accreditation processes is advantageous.

The department operates a 24/7 service supported by rotas with additional payments.

Applications from Band 5 Biomedical Scientists with relevant experience and working towards their Specialist Portfolio will be considered, with an Annex 21 pay arrangement during portfolio completion. Failure to complete within 2 years may result in regrading to Band 5.

Main Duties
  • Perform scientific duties in Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion sections to ensure smooth service operation.
  • Provide technical analysis on biological samples, maintaining specialist equipment valued up to £1 million.
  • Train and supervise Band 5 and Trainee Biomedical Scientists and support staff.
  • Act as section lead in the absence of senior leads.
  • Lead validation and verification processes under direction.

Preference given to internal Trust staff, NHS At Risk, and Priority candidates with relevant recent experience.

  2. Apply specialist scientific skills to perform complex analyses.
  3. Understand disease pathology related to results and provide complete reports.
  4. Prioritize workload and perform urgent analyses as needed.
  5. Identify abnormal results and ensure prompt reporting and follow-up.
Person Specification
  • Proven knowledge of disease pathology in relevant disciplines.
  • Experience performing assays relevant to the section.
  • Post-registration experience in a high-volume laboratory.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and participation in professional CPD schemes.
Qualifications
  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (LIBMS).
  • Willingness to pursue further qualifications for career progression.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience with laboratory information systems.
