Job description

Special Needs Teaching Assistant - Primary School | Kilburn, North West London
Location: Kilburn, NW6
Contract: Full-time, Term Time Only (Mon-Fri, 8:30am-3:30pm)
Start Date: ASAP or September 2025
Salary: £21,000 - £25,000 (pro rata, dependent on experience and qualifications)

The Role:
We are looking for a kind, patient, and resilient Special Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) to join our nurturing and inclusive primary school in Kilburn. This role involves supporting children with a range of additional needs including autism spectrum condition (ASC), ADHD, speech and language delays, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, both in the classroom and during small-group or one-to-one interventions.

Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider support team, you will play a vital role in helping pupils access learning, build confidence, and thrive both academically and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide tailored support to pupils with EHCPs and additional learning needs.
  2. Work closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons and resources to individual needs.
  3. Implement specific strategies and support plans designed by the SENCO or external professionals (e.g., Speech & Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists).
  4. Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction.
  5. Deliver targeted one-to-one or small-group interventions in literacy, numeracy, or social skills.
  6. Monitor progress and contribute to regular assessments and review meetings.
  7. Support pupils during unstructured times such as break, lunch, and transitions.
  8. Maintain a safe, calm, and inclusive environment at all times.

Person Specification:
We are looking for someone who is:
  1. Passionate about supporting children with special educational needs.
  2. Calm, empathetic, and emotionally intelligent.
  3. Reliable, proactive, and adaptable to different situations.
  4. Confident working closely with young children, some of whom may display challenging behaviour or have limited communication.
  5. Able to build strong relationships with pupils, staff, and parents.
  6. Skilled in promoting independence while offering appropriate support.

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:
  1. Previous experience in a school setting or working with children with SEN.
  2. A relevant Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant or SEN qualification.
  3. Knowledge of autism, ADHD, and/or communication difficulties.
  4. Team Teach, PECS, or Makaton training (desirable but not essential - training can be provided).
