Job description

We have flexible bank shifts and long-term placement opportunities available for HCPC registered radiographers at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The role would be within the PAH Ultrasound Department, Division C Women & Newborn.

Main duties of the job
  1. Performing Advanced Ultrasound Examinations: Conducting complex and specialized ultrasound scans, interpreting images, and ensuring high diagnostic quality.
  2. Supervising and Mentoring Staff: Guiding junior sonographers and students, offering training and clinical supervision.
  3. Quality Assurance and Protocol Development: Ensuring compliance with safety and imaging standards, and helping develop or refine scanning protocols.
  4. Liaising with Medical Teams: Collaborating with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to discuss findings and patient care.
  5. Managing Workflows and Equipment: Overseeing scheduling, maintenance of ultrasound equipment, and efficient department operations.
  6. Continuing Professional Development: Keeping up-to-date with advancements in ultrasound technology and practices.

Job responsibilities
  1. To undertake independently obstetric or obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations according to the unit policies and guidelines to a high standard.
  2. Have the ability to make clinical judgments and critical decisions of the highest order, using knowledge, skills, and experience.
  3. Be able to interpret clinicians' requirements, recognize the urgency of ultrasound requests, prioritize requests, and determine the appropriate scanning technique, ensuring scans are performed in accordance with best practice and research-based evidence.
  4. To interpret scans and provide a comprehensive, independent, diagnostic report on the woman's condition and make the appropriate diagnosis. Report scan findings using the recommended IT software.
  5. Be competent in the use of all equipment in the Ultrasound department. Use initiative in adapting techniques to optimize image quality and diagnostic yield.
  6. To contribute to the day-to-day management of the department in the absence of the department lead.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  1. BSc. in Radiography or equivalent health professional qualification
  2. A PGC/PGD in obstetric and/or gynaecology ultrasound is essential
  3. You must be HCPC registered
