The Southampton Oxford Neonatal Transport (SONeT) service is provided jointly by UHS (University Hospital Southampton) and OUH (Oxford University Hospital) Neonatal Services. The Southampton SONeT hub is hosted within the UHS Neonatal service team, primarily covering the Wessex region of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (ODN).

SONeT transport nurses work a combination of SONeT shifts and clinical shifts on UHS neonatal unit. Candidates they will work clinically on the neonatal unit (up to 6 months depending on experience) before commencing shifts on SONeT.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The SONeT service in Southampton operates one transport team 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On each shift there will be a dedicated transport nurse, ANNP or Registrar and Consultant. All transfer requests are carefully assessed to ensure the appropriate team configuration for each baby. You will develop your neonatal transport skills to carry out nurse-only transfers of some babies requiring special or high dependency care.

Key Responsibilities Of a SONeT Transport Nurse Include

• Participate in the safe transfer of neonates and their families as part of the multidisciplinary team by road, ferry, or rotary wing aircraft.
• Work in partnership with families, other transport team members, and the clinical teams in both the referring and receiving hospitals to provide evidence-based care for patients.
• Undertake nurse-only transfers of neonates, demonstrating triage and clinical assessment skills.
• Demonstrate expertise in transport equipment, transport logistics and responding to clinical challenges in the transport environment.
  
  

As a band 6 transport nurse, you will work closely within the multidisciplinary team, and with network colleagues in delivering a coordinated stabilisation and transfer of neonates requiring all levels of care. You will need to act as an advocate for infants and their families, and the staff which the transport service supports around the region.

After a supportive induction programme, and in partnership with the wider SONeT team, you will develop your clinical assessment skills, triaging a patient’s clinical suitability for nurse-only transfers and participating in the ongoing evaluation of each patient transfer.

You will be responsible for the delivery of a detailed and accurate clinical handover at the receiving hospital to medical and nursing staff, and will need to produce detailed and accurate written information within the transport record regarding all clinical assessment and treatments administered.

This role will suit an experienced neonatal nurse with a Qualified in Speciality (QIS) qualification and experience of caring for neonates requiring intensive care, including those with cardiac or surgical conditions. The role of a neonatal transport nurse requires leadership and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within the transport environment.

• Registered Nurse (Adult or Child) on Part 1 of the NMC Register or Registered Midwife
• Qualified Nurse/ Midwife (Degree/Diploma)
• Specialist Neonatal Qualified in Speciality Qualification
• Completion of NLS
• Currently working primarily with neonatal patients
• Evidence of ongoing development and education
• Extensive post registration experience within a related specialty
• Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
• Provide evidence of supporting /manage a range of learners in practice.
