Job summary

MBDA is seeking a Software Technical Team Lead for the New Product Development Group in Embedded Software. You will lead a small/medium team delivering software for MBDA's latest naval weapon system, guiding from requirements through deployment.

The role offers hybrid work with 4–5 days on site, and a salary around £65,000 depending on experience. BPSS checks apply, with strong benefits and career progression within MBDA.

Qualifications

• Experience in embedded software development with C/C++ and RTOS.
• Experience with low level software development and FreeRTOS.
• Familiarity with model‑driven development tools (Rhapsody UML) and ICDs on host/target hardware.
• Experience with IBM Engineering Work Management / RTC or similar.

Responsibilities

• Provide strong technical leadership to a software team ensuring architecture meets safety, security and reliability requirements.
• Lead and mentor software engineers, fostering collaboration and delivering to project goals.
• Plan projects with definitions of requirements, timelines and deliverables, coordinating tasks and deadlines.
• Identify technical risks and debt and communicate them to the Software Project Leader.
• Facilitate cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team.
• Drive quality improvement by applying best practices, QA processes and coding standards.
• Provide reporting and metrics to stakeholders and drive data‑driven improvements.

Job description

Join our dynamic team as a hands-on Software Technical Team Lead within the New Product Development Group in Embedded Software Department, where you'll lead a small/medium sized team to deliver our innovative software solution for MBDA latest Naval weapon system. In this fast-paced role, where innovation is key, you'll support the entire development lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment.

Salary: Circa £65,000 depending on experience

Dynamic (hybrid) working: 4 to 5 days, due to workload classification

Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship.

Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. As a minimum and after offer stage, all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), which are managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

The opportunity:

We are looking for a passionate, inquisitive and determined Software Technical Team Leader to lead a team of software engineers in the design and development of the software solution. Using their strong software technical knowledge and leadership skills, guide the team to ensure the software architecture and design meet safety, security, and reliability requirements before full implementation. Steering and supporting technical sub-systems conversations with a software focus, this role involves working cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines.

This role will suit someone who is looking to take on more technical responsibility with a view of progressing their career through the MBDA technical pathway.

Responsibilities

• Software Design Quality: Providing strong technical ability to ensure the software architecture and design meet safety, security, and reliability requirements before full implementation
• Team Leadership: Provide leadership and guidance to a team of software developers, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
• Project Planning and Coordination: Collaborate with the Software Project Leader and stakeholders to define project requirements, timelines, and deliverables. Ensure effective coordination among team members, ensuring tasks are assigned, and deadlines are met.
• Identify and communicate the technical risks and debt for the activity to the Software Project Leader.
• Collaboration and Communication: Facilitate effective communication among team members, stakeholders, and other cross-functional teams. Foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the team.
• Quality Assurance and Process Improvement: Ensure the team follows software development best practices, quality assurance processes, and coding standards. Identify opportunities for process improvement and optimization. Collaborate with stakeholders to define and implement quality improvement initiatives.
• Reporting & Metrics: Suggesting improvements where appropriate using the data collected.

What we're looking for from you:

• Experience in the development of embedded software with C / C++ is essential, along with a knowledge of Real Time Operating Systems.
• Experience of low level software development, FreeRTOS, driver development and ARM Assembler - would be beneficial.
• Experience of Rhapsody UML or other model-driven development tools and being comfortable developing and testing software to requirements & ICD’s on both host and target hardware.
• Experience of IBM’s Engineering Work Management / Rational Team Concert tool or similar.
• Team leading experience would be beneficial, as this role involves a blend of both software engineering and leading engineers to deliver to project.
• Can do’ and flexible approach – you’ll enjoy solving technical problems that sometimes extend beyond the bounds of “software”
• Excellent analytical and design ability, including review and critical analysis and generation of design documentation
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders, including senior management, Subject Matter Experts and internal engineer departments.
