Job summary

Ryft, a fast-growing fintech start-up in Manchester, is seeking a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead one of our core payments squads. You’ll own delivery, health, and growth of a team building on our C#/.NET and AWS platform, staying close to code while guiding architectural decisions.

In this first-line management role, you’ll spend time unblocking delivery, mentoring engineers, and shaping roadmaps with Product.

• Strong background in C#/.NET and AWS. Able to engage deeply on architecture and code.

Responsibilities

• Lead & Grow People: Line-manage a squad of engineers. Own 1:1s, career development, performance, and hiring as we scale.
• Own Delivery: Drive your squad's roadmap alongside Product. Keep delivery predictable, unblock the team, and manage stakeholders honestly.
• Stay Technical: Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews, and hands-on work. Set and hold engineering standards.
• Build the Team: Run a high-quality, high-pace hiring bar as we grow. Onboard and mentor new joiners.
• Own Operations: Take ownership of your squad's on-call, incident response, and production health in a regulated payments environment.
• Collaborate: Work across Product, Compliance, and other squads to ship secure, scalable payments features.

About The Role

We're looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead one of our core payments squads (Payment Integrations, Merchant Accounts, or Card Present). You'll own the delivery, health, and growth of a team building on our C#/.NET and AWS platform, while staying close enough to the code to earn your engineers' trust.

You'll spend most of your time leading people and unblocking delivery, but you'll stay hands-on, contributing to architecture, reviews, and the occasional build. It's a first-line management role reporting into engineering leadership, with room to grow as we scale the team significantly.

This is a hybrid role based in central Manchester, with 2 days per week in the office.

• Payments/Fintech Domain: Experience building payment systems or working in a regulated financial environment.
• Scaling Experience: Track record of hiring and growing a team at pace.
• Architecture: Microservices, RESTful APIs, and containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes).
