Job summary

EMBL Imaging Centre in Heidelberg seeks a Software Engineer to develop and sustain software for microscopy platforms. You’ll own delivery across the software lifecycle, collaborating with engineers, physicists, biologists and researchers to translate needs into reliable, maintainable solutions for instrument control, automation and real-time data workflows.

Qualifications

• MSc or similar degree in software engineering, computer science, engineering, physics or related field.
• Experience developing maintainable software for hardware control or scientific instrumentation.
• Advanced software-development skills in C++, Python, LabVIEW, Java or MATLAB.
• Experience GUI development for instrumentation control using Qt or Tk.
• Strong software-engineering practices including Git version control.
• Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and translate scientific requirements.

Responsibilities

• Own the microscopy-control software platform and its lifecycle.
• Design and integrate software and electronic control components for new capabilities.
• Translate user needs into maintainable control schemes and UIs.
• Apply software-engineering practices across architecture, testing, documentation and deployment.
• Explore AI-enabled automation to improve robustness and reproducibility.
• Diagnose and resolve software–hardware integration issues.
• Maintain records for reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
• Provide expert support for EMBL platforms.
