Job summary

The Open University is seeking a Software Engineer (Development) to join the Teaching and Learning group. You will build scalable, secure, and high‑performing online learning software for staff and students, participating in all stages of the development lifecycle.

You will collaborate with engineers, designers, and product owners to deliver robust solutions, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Proven software development experience across the lifecycle.
• Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle (design, development, testing, deployment).
• Experience designing scalable and efficient software solutions.
• Proficiency in testing to ensure quality and reliability of software products.
• Experience modeling data and supporting user experience design.
• Awareness of security practices and quality assurance processes.
• Ability to analyse requirements and translate to technical specs.
• Experience supporting application and system operations.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the development of software systems from design to deployment following best practices.
• Assist in designing and documenting software and system architectures to ensure scalability and reliability.
• Write, test, and maintain high‑quality code with test scripts and documentation.
• Support integration of software components and systems for seamless interoperability.
• Lead testing efforts with test plans to validate functionality, performance and security.
• Manage software configuration and version control, ensuring changes are tracked and retrievable.
• Contribute to data modelling and database design to support application development.
• Support user experience design and analysis to ensure usability and stakeholder satisfaction.
