Job summary

Fortinet in London is seeking a software engineer to join our Insight Team at Moorgate, four days per week on-site. You will work on policies, detection techniques, ML, data identifiers, and backend services in Go, C/C++, and Python, with a focus on security and reliability.

The role requires a CS degree, strong programming background, and collaboration across teams to ship features from specs to releases in a fast-paced cybersecurity environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Strong CS concepts: memory management, concurrency, and backend development principles.
• Several years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience with Java, C, C++, or similar languages; open to learning Go.
• Familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages.
• Interest in data science, ML, analytics, or NLP applied to security.
• Clear communicators who collaborate well across disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain policies in Starlark for endpoints to detect unauthorized activity.
• Investigate new cybersecurity detection techniques.
• Apply ML and statistics to detect anomalies.
• Develop data identifiers, such as regex, to detect sensitive data.
• Contribute to content extraction and infrastructure in C, C++, and Swift.
• Enhance execution environment for policies built in Go.
• Manage policy lifecycle in backend systems with Go, Protobuf, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch.
• Collaborate on browser extensions, mail plugins, REST APIs, and frontend improvements.
• Cover full development lifecycle from specs to demos and releases.
• Work with support and QA to ensure smooth rollout.

Requirements

• We require a bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science or a closely related field.
• We require a strong grasp of core computer science concepts, including memory management, concurrency, and backend development principles.
• We require strong programming skills supported by several years of professional software engineering experience.
• We require experience with Java, C, C++, or similar languages, and an openness to learning Go.
• We require familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages.
• We value an interest or background in data science, machine learning, statistical analysis, or natural language processing, especially as applied to behavioral analytics and anomaly detection.
• We look for clear communicators who work well with a wide range of collaborators and build shared understanding across disciplines.

Responsibilities

• We design and maintain policies written in Starlark that run on endpoints to detect signs of unauthorized or malicious activity.
• We continuously investigate new techniques to detect emerging forms of cybersecurity violations.
• We apply machine learning and statistical techniques to detect anomalies and identify suspicious or unexpected behavior.
• We research and develop data identifiers, such as regular expressions, to detect sensitive information.
• We contribute to the underlying content extraction and identification infrastructure, including components written in C, C++, and Swift.
• We enhance and maintain the execution environment for policies, built primarily in Go.
• We manage the policy lifecycle within our backend systems, including APIs and infrastructure built in Go, using technologies like Protocol Buffers, PostgreSQL, and Elasticsearch.
• We collaborate with teams across the company on browser extensions, mail plugins, content inspection, data blocking, REST APIs, and frontend improvements.
• We work across the full development lifecycle, from writing technical specifications and coordinating implementation to demoing features, supporting launches, and ensuring solutions are well documented and maintainable.
• We partner closely with support and QA teams to prepare for releases, debug early issues, and ensure a smooth rollout experience.
